Manchester City vs. Tottenham Pick – EPL Gameweek 2 – Aug. 17th

Undoubtedly the marquee matchup of the week takes place in Manchester, where Man City will host an upstart Spurs side. While City are again favoured to take home the Premier League title, Tottenham were expected to at the very least close the gap this season. They have made some impressive acquisitions within the July transfer window, and the style they employ could be problematic for Pep Guardiola’s Man City group.

This has all the makings of an instant classic, and there will be no shortage of talent, and hopefully goals on display. Both squads started their respective campaigns with impressive and convincing victories over lowly opposition, and will surely be keen for a step-up in terms of class and quality.

Manchester City vs. Tottenham Hotspur Pick:

Though these are two of the likely top-3 Premier League sides going at it, the odds indicate there is still a large gap within the table. While Man City have the experience and recent form, the Spurs have certainly narrowed the disparity between the sides and will be eager to prove this at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The Spurs’ defense will be strengthened entering this clash as it is believed Jan Vertonghen will re-enter the fold. That should help against a potent Man City attack. Beyond that, the Spurs will also be buoyed by an appearance from new boy Giovani Lo Celso who should add some real flair and creativity to the Spurs’ counter. He’ll be joined by the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Kane up front, and that trio should really create issues for Manchester City. Last week, youngster Tanguy Ndombele made his debut in a Spurs shirt and dazzled right from the get-go. In his first big match at the club, he should also be counted on to make a positive contribution.

While many feel that Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino will likely head north with the expectations of playing to secure a draw, the Spurs’ lineup isn’t built like that anymore. They have legitimate firepower and possess the necessary skill and quality to take a run at the defending champions. If they go to the Etihad and have a real go, their results should be positive.

Yes, Man City boast a transitional attack like few others have seen. Their depth and quality is unmatched, but the Spurs are one of the few sides that have the grit and size within the midfield now to slow them down and play the match at their pace. We’ve seen the likes of David Silva, Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Aguero get shut down before – why can’t an improved Spurs’ midfield and defense do the same? Let’s not forget that the Spurs bested Man City last year in the Champions League, and they have drastically enhanced the quality of their team at many key positions.

While this game is being priced as if it is a drastic mismatch, that simply isn’t the case. Tottenham will show they have the quality to play with Manchester City and if they protect the ball and ensure they don’t get caught with too many forward – I like Tottenham’s chances to keep this tight throughout. While I wouldn’t rule out a draw, Tottenham Hotspur +1.5 goals seems like the best market to get involved with here. Enjoy what should be a thrilling affair between these two giants of England.

My Pick
Spurs +1.5
