When the restart commenced in mid-June, it seemed to be a bit of a long shot for Manchester United to jump into a Champions League spot, but they have that opportunity in their final few games.
Some minor slip-ups from Chelsea and a major run of poor form from Leicester City has really opened the door for Manchester United, and if they can keep securing results – Champions League football could be awaiting them for next season.
Manchester United are in excellent form right now. They have righted the ship defensively, and their offense remains one of the best in all the Premier League. Young talents such as Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood have been dynamic in recent weeks, and they’ll be hoping that continues against a solid Southampton group.
For Southampton, unlike Man United there isn’t as much on the line for them. They’re safe from relegation after a tough start to their season, and are not in a position to push for European spots.
When these teams met earlier this year, it was a thrilling 3-2 win for Man United. A repeat of that would surely be exciting, and certainly United would be content with that. But will an in-form Southampton group just roll over to the Red Devils? Absolutely not. Manchester United vs. Southampton Pick:
Manchester United are absolutely rolling at the moment, and with no injury concerns or built-in rests, it should be more of the same from a starting eleven that continues to work very well together.
Look for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to maintain a steady 4-2-3-1 formation, one that allows for a lot of flexibility and numbers going forward in attack. Fullbacks Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been integral to the offense of late, pushing the pace with blistering runs and telling crosses from the flanks.
In the midfield, the big Frenchman Paul Pogba will continue to control the tempo and pace of the match. Dominant both on the ground and in the air, look for Pogba to excel at winning the ball for United, while also providing excellent distribution up top to the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial. That striking duo is simply lethal at the moment, and the Saints’ defense will be hard-pressed to try and slow them down.
For Southampton, they are certainly going to have their hands full dealing with United. They’ve never been a stingy defensive side, and instead will definitely have a go at United, in what should be a relatively open and offensive match.
The Saints will need key midfield pieces in James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond to be able to disrupt United’s timing and rhythm when on the ball, though they’ll also need to be clinical themselves to catch the Red Devils on the break when countering. That is much easier said than done, however.
Up top, Danny Ings is in elite form for Southampton and continues his push to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot. United’s centre of defense continues to look a little suspect at times, and Ings could definitely capitalize on that. This should be an open game, with both squads pushing the attack forward.
This should be an exciting encounter. With two in-form, offensive teams going at it, expect some chances and goals. Man United will be clear victors, but the spread and money line prices are steep. Instead, look for both teams to find the back of the net, and this match to sail over the posted goal total.
Pick: Manchester United 3-1
