RB Leipzig vs. Koln Pick – Bundesliga Matchday 29 – June 1

Another solid Sunday of Bundesliga betting action will carry us with some momentum into the final game of Matchday 29, between Koln and RB Leipzig.

Yesterday we endured a 1-1 split, cashing our big bet on Monchengladbach -1, though Paderborn +1.5 flamed out in the final ten minutes. One thing that is quite clear from following the Bundesliga, the gulf between top teams and bottom teams is quite significant. It certainly seems wider than the gap between top table sides and bottom-table clubs in a league like England’s Premier League. Note to self, don’t bet Paderborn anymore.

We’ll move onto today though and put our 14-4 record on the line in what should be an intriguing clash between two teams that play an exciting style of football. For RB Leipzig, they’re coming off of a disappointing draw their last time out against Hertha Berlin. With Leipzig already missing out on the title, they need to secure a Champions League berth – and need to gain full points against weakened sides.

Koln represents just that, as the mid-table side haven’t been all that great since the restart. They’re coming off of a 3-1 defeat to Hoffenheim mid-week, and are not yet out of the woods in terms of a relegation battle. They’ll need to play better down the stretch, though a hardened RB Leipzig squad represents a real test.

Koln vs. RB Leipzig Pick:

Wednesday’s match for RB Leipzig represented their fourth draw from their past five outings. This team is skilled and talented, but they don’t take advantage of opportunities frequently enough to truly challenge for the top of the table.

The gap is now likely too big to catch Bayern Munich, though RB Leipzig needs Champions League action next season, and they’ll need wins in order to attain this goal.

When analyzing Leipzig’s season so far, it’s apparent they have also endured some tough luck along the way. This is a group that sits first in expected goals against and second in expected goals for. There aren’t many holes within this lineup, but the fact that they’re missing the dominating wins on their resume, makes many pundits feel like something is missing.

Koln meanwhile continue their downward spiral since the restart. Headed into the break, this was an upstart group that was potentially challenging for a Europa League spot. They’ve blown big leads and since winning 8 of 11 prior to the pause, Koln now are winless from their last three. What’s more concerning is their defensive play and discipline is absent at the moment, and they’re likely dropping valuable points to inferior sides.

This is not a good recipe for a frustrated RB Leipzig squad looking to make a statement victory on Monday afternoon. Expect a focused group to overwhelm Koln, especially at the back. RB Leipzig boast a potent attack led by one of the best strikers in the game, Timo Werner. His partnership with Yussuf Poulsen continues to be lethal, and should be able to maneuver around Koln’s porous back-four.

Look for a wide-open game, and likely one in which Koln finds a goal as well. Both sides are motivated to improve right now, though only Leipzig has the impressive skillset to ‘flip that switch’ as the points become more and more crucial. It’s a tad chalky, but look for the more talented side to finally turn their draws into wins down the stretch. Expect a routine victory for RB Leipzig to close out an entertaining Matchday 29.

Prediction: RB Leipzig 3-1
