Real Sociedad will welcome Valencia to San Sebastian on Tuesday evening for an early season LaLiga battle. It’s a brand new campaign after what feels like they just finished up the previous season a week or two again. That’s of course not the case, but players in the elite European leagues did not get much of a breather before league play resumed.
The same could be said for Major League Soccer, which basically played their championship and then turned around to begin a new campaign. Real Madrid were too much to handle after the 2019-20 season resumed, while Lionel Messi and Barcelona faded off. Terrible focus from Barcelona.
Messi did all he could to carry the load, but he didn’t get much help from his teammates. The frustration on his face reflected what was happening behind the scenes as well. After all of it, though, Messi remains with Barcelona, but the drama isn’t over. Barca sold Luis Suarez only fueling Messi’s frustration. Stay tuned.
The Premier League and Serie A are off on Tuesday, so La Liga is there to fill the void in Europe. There are two matches on the slate, with Real Sociedad and Valencia playing the early game, and Getafe and Betis wrapping things up right after. Real Sociedad did well enough last season to reach the Europa League group stage.
Real Sociedad finished with a record of 16-8-14 and 60 points for sixth in the La Liga table. Valencia missed out after finishing 14-11-13 with 53 points. They had a goal differential of -7, so you can’t say they really deserved to be a Europa League qualifier.
Real Sociedad and Valencia have both played three matches thus far, with Real holding a record of 1-2-0 and Valencia at 1-1-1 going into San Sebastian. Head below for our free Real Sociedad vs. Valencia pick for September 29, 2020.
Real Sociedad vs. Valencia LaLiga Betting Odds:
Real Sociedad vs. Valencia Prediction:
Real Sociedad were in excellent form on Saturday against Elche. They took care of business with a 3-0 victory. Real Sociedad could have very easily had a letdown spot after an impressive performance against Real Madrid, but held up well and deserved the 3 points.
Real Sociedad played hard against Madrid to grab a point in a 0-0 draw. That was a best-case scenario, with a point feeling like a win against mighty Madrid. They completely outclassed Elche after the draw against the defending La Liga champs.
Sociedad threw 27 shots towards the Elche net, with 7 of them hitting the target. Conversely, Elche were able to manage just 5 shots with 2 on target. With David Silva transferring from Manchester City to Sociedad, you have to think that this club is in better shape than they were a season ago.
He might be able to put them over the hump and into Champions League territory. The depth of this club is much stronger, so expect a slightly better record than 16-8-14. I’m not so sure Valencia were able to improve their roster from last season’s 14-11-13 campaign.
Valencia have been so-so thus far in the 2020-21 campaign. Sociedad has looked ahead of them going into Tuesday. They started off with a 4-2 win over hapless Levante, and then came up with a loss versus Celta Vigo on the road and draw versus Huesca at home. Note that Celta Vigo went 7-16-15 with 37 points to narrowly avoid relegation last season for 17th.
Leganes was relegated with 36 points, so that was a close call. Meanwhile, Huesca was only recently promoted back to LaLiga. In other words, their only strong performance this season was against a Levante club that finished 12th in 2019-20.
Valencia was able to force a draw in two of their last three meetings against Sociedad, but note they were pounded for a 3-0 loss in their last trip to San Sebastian in February. Expect Real Sociedad to be in better form today, as they dispatch Valencia in their second straight encounter versus this club. I’m anticipating a 2-1 victory for the home side on Tuesday.
