A lot of football in Italy on Wednesday in Serie A. We have a full menu of action, as there is a ten-match slate scheduled for Wednesday. The action begins in the afternoon between Cagliari and Benevento, and concludes in the evening with a big showdown between AC Milan and Juventus in Milan at San Siro.
That will be a nice day to end the day in Italy. For those of you on the other side of the pond in North America, the Serie A action commences early in the morning at 6:30 a.m. EST, while AC Milan and Juventus are scheduled for 2:45 p.m. EST.
Along with some afternoon college basketball, there is no shortage of options on Wednesday. In Europe, this is a Serie A day, with only one match in Spain and none in England in the EPL. Serie A gets its time in the spotlight today. I’m a fan of Italian football, maybe more so than the other elite leagues in Europe, so I’m pleased to see a full card.
The table has the two Milan clubs at the top, with AC Milan continuing to lead with a record of 11-4-0 and 37 points. Inter Milan is just a point behind AC with a record of 11-3-1 and 36 points. Roma is the next to round out the top-3 with a mark of 9-3-3 and 30 points. Where is Juventus you ask? Juventus has been struggling by their standards in fifth.
If the season were to end today before any matches played, Juventus would be going to the Europa League group stage. With Inter and AC playing so well, they have a lot of work ahead of them if they want to win the Serie A title for the tenth straight time. AC Milan in the 2010-11 campaign was the last winner of Serie A not named Juventus.
Inter Milan has been red-hot and is making their case for being the best team in Italy, though. Between AC and Inter, they’ve won a combined eight matches and two draws in their previous five tilts. Inter is a perfect 7-0-0 in their last five outings in Serie A matches. They are coming off a dominant 6-2 performance over Crotone on Sunday at home.
Sampdoria will play host to Inter at Luigi Ferraris on Wednesday afternoon in Genoa. They are hoping to catch Inter going into Genoa feeling a bit too comfortable. If Inter brings their recent form with them to Genoa, then Sampdoria can forget about it. Sampdoria goes into Wednesday with a record of 5-2-8 and 17 points. Enough to avoid relegation, but ten points behind Juventus for a Europa League berth. They are coming off two losses versus Sassuolo, 3-2, and Roma, 1-0 on Sunday. Head below for our free Sampdoria vs. Inter Milan pick on January 6, 2021.
Sampdoria vs. Inter Milan Serie A Betting Odds:
Sampdoria vs. Inter Milan Prediction:
Inter Milan hasn’t lost in Serie A since a loss against rival AC Milan on October 17. That was against the best club, at least with regard to points right now, in Serie A. It’s no shame for Inter to lose that match by a score of 2-1. They were competitive, and in fact, Inter put more shots on target with 6 as opposed to 4 for AC.
Inter controlled the time of possession at 56% as well. If you want to look at the pass accuracy, Inter led in that department as well with 81% converted passes compared to 76% for AC. That’s a match that could have gone either way. Credit for Inter hanging in there and they haven’t lost since. They have been a force offensively with 2.67 goals scored per game.
Overall, their body of work has been better on the road, with 2.43 goals scored and 0.86 goals conceded per game. Inter has been less effective defensively at home, having allowed 1.27 goals against per game. They are coming off a clinic against Crotone, as they pummeled their opponent for a final score of 6-2. Crotone is going to be facing relegation, but Sampdoria hasn’t shown much this season.
Sampdoria’s most recent win was on December 19 against Crotone, 3-1. Beating up on Crotone isn’t the most impressive feat. Sampdoria has netted an average of 1.53 goals and 1.67 goals conceded per match in the 2020-21 Serie A campaign. The teams they’ve skewed their numbers positively against isn’t anything to get excited about, Atalanta being the exception in a 3-1 win.
However, since that win, Hellas Verona and Crotone are their only wins. The absence of Lukaku is a boost for Sampdoria on Wednesday, but likely not enough of an advantage in Genoa today. Expect Sampdoria to be competitive at least, though a 2-1 or 3-1 win for red-hot Inter Milan is likely. Their form is the best in Serie A at the moment, and a road trip for Inter shouldn’t hurt them much.
