The big boys of La Liga both took care of business on Sunday, as Real Madrid edged out Athletic Bilbao by a score of 1-0 on a Sergio Ramos penalty kick. It was expected to be a tight contest and Real, like they tend to do, found a way to get 3 points. They forced Barcelona into what was essentially a must-win situation later in the day.
Barca also had a tough matchup against a quality Villarreal squad. It wasn’t tight at all, as Barca routed Villarreal for a 4-1 win. It could have been an even bigger win than that. Barca hit the target 11 times as opposed to just 2 for Villarreal. They wanted it really badly and it showed on the stat sheet. The solid effort by Barca also showed in our bankrolls.
Real Madrid are clear of Barcelona by 4 points going into Matchday 35. If Bilbao held in there for just a little longer, Barcelona would be in an excellent position right now. However, they did what they had to do to keep pace. Barcelona can only worry about what they have in front of them.
Some help elsewhere is going to be required if they want to catch Real Madrid for the La Liga title, though. Their performance on Sunday might be a turning point for the rest of the campaign, but Madrid have been in excellent form and don’t look ready to give up the lead. Behind Barcelona, there is Atletico Madrid and Sevilla.
It’s more like Real Madrid and Barcelona, then everyone else in La Liga. No one is catching Real Madrid and Barca. However, there is still an opportunity for Sevilla to reel in Atletico Madrid. Down by 5 points it’s not going to be easy, but the opportunity is there for Sevilla to get into the top-3 of La Liga.
Sevilla enters Monday with a record of 15-12-6 and 57 points. Atletico Madrid are currently 16-14-4 with 62 points. The last time we saw Sevilla was on Tuesday. They routed Leganes for a textbook 3-0 victory. Oliver Torres found the back of the net in quick succession, with goals at the 23rd minute mark and 35th. Munir El Haddadi added a late strike to put the game out of reach. Sevilla welcomes 17th place Eibar to Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Monday for Matchday 34. Sevilla vs. Eibar La Liga Betting Odds:
Sevilla vs. Eibar Prediction:
Eibar are doing their best to avoid relegation and have that to play for the rest of the season. With a 6-point advantage on Mallorca, they could be in a worse position right now. Since returning from the shutdown, Eibar have wins against Granada and Valencia. They also have losses against Real Madrid and Osasanu, with draws versus Athletic Bilbao and Getafe. It’s been up and down for them, with a 2-1 win over Granada on the road their best performance since returning to play.
However, that confidence was shattered against Osasuna in their most recent outing at home. They were losers by a final score of 2-0 on Thursday. It was a fairly even match otherwise, though. Eibar has recorded just 0.62 goals per match on the road, while conceding 1.62 goals per match in the 2019-20 La Liga campaign.
Eibar handled Sevilla at home earlier in the season, 3-2, on September 26, 2019. A lot has changed since that point, though. Sevilla has been in far better form and have played competitive football since returning to the pitch. Their best effort may have been a draw versus Barcelona on June 19.
Sevilla matched Barca with 3 shots on target to force a draw at home. Their most lopsided performance was on Tuesday over Leganes. Sevilla won in a 3-0 blowout, as they handled business on the road against a struggling Leganes club. Sevilla are in their best form at home where they’ve netted 1.38 goals per match and 0.88 goals conceded.
The propeller that drives Sevilla, Lucas Ocampos, will be present for the home club on Monday. Ocampos is the best player on the pitch in this match. He enters Monday with 14 goals on the season. Eibar should be able to make things interesting in this one, though expect Ocampos and Sevilla to be too much. I’m looking at a 2-0 or 2-1 win for the home side.
