Sevilla vs. Manchester United Pick – Europa League August 16

A spot in the coveted Europa League Final will be on the line when Sevilla locks horns with Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

Both sides are proud clubs and former winners of this competition, and while many likely will feel that this could and should be the actual Final, that’s the way the draw goes down sometimes!

Sevilla have put together an impressive campaign and will be hoping to cap it off with some silverware. They finished top-four in La Liga, and combine a stifling defensive approach with clutch and timely scoring. Against a talented Man United side, that could come in handy.

For United, the Red Devils enter as the favourites to hoist the Europa League trophy, but if their last match against Copenhagen was any indication – it isn’t going to come easy. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will revert to his strongest lineup and hope that their edge in skill and pace can push them through to the championship match.

It’s always exciting when Man United chase titles, right? Love them or hate them, this club has been fascinating to watch this season, and Sunday’s match against Sevilla presents another big challenge. Continue reading on beneath the posted odds for up-to-date team news, a tactical preview, and a betting prediction for this big-time semi-final showdown between Sevilla and Manchester United. Enjoy!

Sevilla vs. Man United Pick:

Sevilla have to enter Sunday’s contest feeling good about where their squad is at the moment. There are no injury concerns and having already qualified for next year’s Champions League, significantly reduces the pressure on this talented squad.

Expect coach Julen Lopetegui to go with a familiar 4-3-3 formation, with an onus on being solid at the back and frustrating the skill and pace of Manchester United’s heralded attack. A key player for the Spanish side will be Fernando, who should play in the midfield for Sevilla. He’ll be tasked with disrupting the flow of Man U’s offense and disallowing tons of time and space on the ball for their creators – especially Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes.

Up top, Sevilla has impressive scoring touch with Lucas Ocampos and Suso both entering Sunday’s semi-final in fine-form. We’ve seen Man United look vulnerable at the back, and those two can create a wealth of chances with overloading runs and excellent distance shooting.

For United, look for David de Gea to again take a back-seat to Sergio Romero, as the Spaniard’s time at the club looks to be coming to an unceremonious end. They’ll go with a flexible 4-2-3-1 formation, though their central-back pairing and defensive play without the ball leaves a bit to be desired. Youngster Brandon Williams will be tasked with the duty of snuffing out the Sevilla attack – a tall ask for the unproven wing-back.

Up front though is where United enter this match with a decisive edge. They’ll want to play with the ball, and they should be able to for the most part. Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic are excellent in holding roles, and will be imperative in terms of tracking and winning loose balls. That should lead to chances forward for an impressive attacking quartet of Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Anthony Martial. The speed of that group should be worrisome to Sevilla, especially on the counter.

Those four are arguably the most in-form group of any attack on the planet right now. Their pace and trickery on the ball is excellent, and though Sevilla do well to defend in layers and possess great structure, the finishing ability of Man United at the moment is beyond impressive. A game-breaking moment is certainly possible from any of those individuals.

This should be a closely contested affair, but Sevilla might prove to not have enough to go toe-to-toe against Manchester United. Their lack of speed on the break will be telling, and the United counter-attack needs to be monitored if the Spanish side commits too far forward. It’s been a long and trying year for the Red Devils, but being two wins away from European glory should re-motivate this tired crew. It will be tight, but United to secure victory in 90 minutes remains impressive value. At a lofty +145 price, expect Manchester United to finish on top come Sunday.
