Tottenham Hotspur vs. Liverpool EPL Gameweek 20 Pick – January 28

This is certainly shaping up to be one of the more thrilling Premier League seasons in recent memory, as for the first time in a long while, there is no runaway winner.

While it seems like the Manchester clubs might be favourites to be battling it out in the spring, a key loss by United yesterday to Sheffield Utd., has once again burst the door wide-open for other title contenders.

Two of those top clubs will square off Thursday afternoon, in what promises to be a thoroughly intense matchup. Spurs vs. Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp vs. Jose Mourinho – and with all of the exciting attacking play going on from both sides, Thursday’s clash should go a long way in setting up a thrilling second-half of the EPL campaign.

The Spurs will look to continue their recent winning ways, and as the home side – enter with a bit of an advantage. They’ve won five of their six contests, and this hot run has firmly vaulted them back into contention. Under Mourinho they continue to be solid at the back, well-organized, and Harry Kane can seemingly score whenever he wants. At White Hart Lane, this has been a tough team to beat.

For Liverpool, it’s been a puzzling start to 2021 for the Reds. Though they have been hurt by injuries, this is still a team loaded with skill and attacking flair. They were knocked out of the FA Cup over the weekend, and have lost three of their past five competitive matches overall. They’re winless in the league since mid-December, and while it isn’t wise to count them out – their form is shocking at the moment.

All of that should contribute to a pretty fascinating affair in north London on Thursday. With the title race rapidly tightening, the Reds see an outside shot at repeating, while the Spurs seek to prove their detractors wrong. Tottenham vs. Liverpool Pick:

It’s a tad surprising to see the odds shift so far in favour of a struggling Liverpool side. The Spurs will be nearing full health, and Mourinho has done a great job of relying on his depth lately to ensure full health of his star talents.

As such, expect a 4-2-3-1 lineup from the Spurs, with Harry Kane leading the line and Son Heung-min playing just behind him in support. That duo has been dynamic all season long for Tottenham, and against a Liverpool back-line that has shown flaws without Virgil van Dijk, the Spurs should be able to break through.

Expect the Spurs stylistically to also be perfectly content to allow Liverpool retain the bulk of possession and control. Tottenham are used to it after a year of Mourinho, and with their pace and attacking flair at the forward positions – the Spurs are one of the best clubs in the world on the counter-attack.

Liverpool have been boosted by the return of central defender Joel Matip, and that should allow team captain Jordan Henderson to go back into his more familiar midfield holding role. Jurgen Klopp will go with his formidable 4-3-3 formation, allowing wing-backs Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold to roam free down the flanks. This is a very attack-oriented club.

Up top, the Reds still boast an excellent front-three of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane, and though they’re all mired in some pretty lengthy droughts and slumps, the Spurs’ defense does have holes and should be exploited. Whether or not this struggling trio can do the job right now though, well that remains to be seen.

Both of these squads present a ton of intrigue, and this match should be fascinating. Expect a more focused Liverpool squad, but against the pace and finishing ability of the Spurs, it seems unlikely they can keep them off the scoresheet. Look for both teams to score, and though the line is slanted towards Liverpool, it’s the Spurs that seem the more likely side to gain a result. Their form is excellent at the moment, and they play a brand of football that can frustrate the Reds. Taking the home-side Spurs +0.5 to either win/draw seems like good value for Thursday.

My Pick
Spurs +0.5
