Live team sports have finally returned to our television screens, and Saturday morning was quite the start for us in the Bundesliga. A perfect 3-0 record is a great welcome back gifr, and we will look to keep that momentum going into a light Sunday slate.
Today’s featured matchup occurs in Berlin, where upstart club Union Berlin will welcome the league leaders in Bayern Munich. Bayern have historically dominated the Bundesliga over the past seasons, winners of seven straight league titles. This year however, it seems to be a tight battle to the finish, and Bayern is well-aware that they can ill afford to concede many more points from here forward.
Though many figured Union Berlin would just be happy to finally make it into the Bundesliga, their form this season has come as a bit of a surprise. For the most part, they have avoided the relegation battle and their first run-through in Germany’s top flight has been stellar.
For Bayern, it’s just a case of not getting tired with success. This year they have many worthy challengers – including a powerful Dortmund side coming off a 4-0 win themselves in yesterday’s match. Bayern now sit a point up, though it was Dortmund who provided the blueprint on how to play with enthusiasm and flair in these fan-less games.
Bayern entered the league’s pause on quite the tear. They haven’t lost in their past 11 fixtures, and took 31 out of a possible 33 points before the break. There’s a reason why they are such lofty favourites in Sunday’s clash, and they deserve that standing. Still though, Union Berlin have made a name for themselves this season by pulling off big surprises – and could another one be in store for Matchday 26? Read on beneath the posted odds for a detailed tactical breakdown, as well as an official betting prediction as we look to continue our perfect record so far.

Union Berlin vs. Bayern Munich Pick:
You have to feel somewhat for Union Berlin in this contest. They have hardcore and loyal fans, and already their new stadium has become quite the fortress. It’s a tough place to play and surely their supporters were definitely looking forward to welcoming the kings in Bayern Munich. But without the stands filled, you do have to wonder if that gives a decisive edge in this contest to Bayern Munich.
Making matters worse for Union is the fact that they’ll be without an important trio of players. Midfielder Sheraldo Becker, along with Yunus Malli and Marvin Friedrich will all be sidelined – either due to suspension or injury. Adding insult, it also doesn’t help that they’ll be without the services of their Swiss manager, Urs Fischer, who has been banned after breaking quarantine protocols.
For Bayern, the break has allowed the giants to rest and recover as nearly all of their first-team options have returned to full health and fitness. The champs will line-up in their traditional 4-2-3-1 lineup, with Robert Lewandowski the elite talisman up front. He’s a handful for any defense, and should give fits to this depleted Union Berlin back-line.
Look for elite support on the flanks from the shifty Serge Gnabry and the rapid Kingsley Coman to overwhelm the Union Berlin midfield, and Bayern should control the bulk of possession and chances in this one. Though Union have pulled off some upsets on their home turf, Sunday’s clash won’t be another one. With the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Champions League, you can bet that Bayern Munich are again fully focused on continuing their Bundesliga reign, and won’t want to relinquish that throne to anyone.
Since their coaching change, Bayern have been in dominant form. By all accounts Bayern have returned to training feisty and driven for success. Expect this group to be ready to put on a show, en route to a convincing victory. While Bayern to win is a steep price, Munich on the -1.5 handicap represents a better option. Look for a 3-1 or 4-1 scoreline from the league leaders.
Prediction: Bayern Munich 4-1
