Union Berlin vs. Borussia Dortmund Bundesliga Pick – December 18

A big Bundesliga showdown unfolds Friday afternoon in Germany as an upstart Union Berlin side will look to try and add to Borussia Dortmund’s misery.

It has certainly been a tumultuous week so far for Dortmund. After sacking manager Lucien Favre following a string of uninspiring outings, the black and yellow club seemed to bounce back with a narrow victory over Werder Bremen. Still, Dortmund have much room to grow and could and should be playing better. On the road in Berlin, it will certainly not be an easy task for interim coach Edin Terzic.

Meanwhile, Union Berlin continues a fine form in the Bundesliga. They’re notoriously difficult to play against, especially at home. They secured a 2-2 draw against Stuttgart mid-week, but will need to continue playing without their top scorer in Max Kruse. Against a team with Dortmund’s firepower, it certainly isn’t a good time to be lacking offensive options.

With all of the intrigue and storylines surrounding Borussia Dortmund at the moment, they are certainly a team worth watching. There was great hope and expectation that this would be the year they’d finally dethrone Bayern Munich, but they look further away than ever. A convincing win on Friday over Union would go a long way, but the hosts from Berlin are always a feisty bunch. Read on below for further team news and a betting prediction for Friday’s lone Bundesliga match-up. Enjoy!

Union Berlin vs. Borussia Dortmund Pick:

Union began this campaign likely exceeding expectations more so than any pundit could’ve imagined. Currently sitting 6th in the Bundesliga, a year away from the second division – is simply a remarkable feat. But you get the sense they are in the process of coming back to reality. Key injuries, namely to leading scorer Max Kruse have seeped in, and Union doesn’t possess the depth to keep up.

Following a blown 2-0 lead in Stuttgart mid-week, Union Berlin will be looking to get back to what has made them successful against Dortmund, but the young German side is littered with skill and creativity, two traits that could give Berlin trouble at the back.

While Dortmund’s win over Werder Bremen vaulted them back into the top-four, there’s still a ton to be done. They need to be more clinical in the attacking third, especially without Erling Haaland – who is expected to miss out on Friday’s clash. They also need to get English international Jadon Sancho going. The talented winger should be taking over games with his pace and skill, but has endured a tough start to this season.

Dortmund has also never shied away from youth, but that could explain this squad’s blatant inconsistencies. It’s believed that Terzic will again turn to 16-year old Youssoufa Moukoko to lead the line in attack for the black and yellow. He’s young, but he’s already shown well in top flight football, and could trouble a depleted Union Berlin defense.

Although Dortmund enters without Haaland, the depth and talent can overcome that absence. The same cannot be said without Kruse for Union Berlin. While Union will seek to protect their goal and defend relentlessly, the skill and creativity of Dortmund should eventually break them down.

Marco Reus, Julian Brandt, and Jadon Sancho are far too good in the midfield, and should allow Terzic’s side complete possession and control. It won’t be easy, but I can’t see Union Berlin posing an attacking threat in this contest, while Dortmund are too skilled not to score. At narrow favourites, back Dortmund to continue to find their form with another crucial three points on Friday.
