After another victory on the Over 2.5 goals between Bosnia & Iran on Wednesday, we’re now a combined 10-5-1 with our featured and bonus selections here at The Sports Geek; good for +4.8 units thus far. We’ll look to keep that streak rolling as we head into the final day of group matches in Brazil, and we’ll focus on the surprising Americans taking on the powerful Germans in a crucial match for both squads.
Many pundits didn’t expect the USA to be in the favourable position they are currently situated in. This was considered a rebuilding World Cup for Jurgen Klinsmann’s side, but impressive outings against supposedly inferior teams in Ghana and Portugal, have the Americans close to advancing past the group stages. A point gets them through, but it remains to be seen how they’ll approach this match against a lethal German side. It should also be noted that the USA will again be without key striker Jozy Altidore as he struggles to recover from a strained left hamstring.
Like the Americans, Germany too would advance in first place with a draw versus the Americans. However, both squads have been adamant that they won’t just sit back and play for a tie. While those tactics certainly wouldn’t be surprising given the history between the American coach and the German national team, it still promises to be an intriguing affair to bring an end to what’s been an exciting Group G in Brazil. Read on below for further game thoughts and our official selection.

USA vs. Germany Prediction:
Despite a late American collapse against Portugal in their last match, it doesn’t take away from how well this side has played thus far in Brazil. They’ve been spirited, hungry, and possess a wealth of surprising quality in their side that has given more talented opposition fits so far. However doing that against a Ghana side mired in internal conflict, and a Portuguese squad clearly lacking depth is one thing, to do it against a powerhouse German team is a whole new challenge. The USA has impressed, but it does not seem like this is a team capable of pulling off a third straight shocker.
The Germans are talented enough to win this match, however their willingness and drive to do so has to be questioned. Will Germany fully exert themselves and play their top line-up, or will they merely sit back and orchestrate a draw? Frankly, it’s not the German style to play that game. Their strength is in their attackers, and they’re at their best when they possess the ball. Still, it would not be a shock at all to see this game unfurl very slowly, perhaps beginning at a bit of walking pace in the early going. Neither squad has much incentive to attack with numbers and potentially make a very costly error as a result. While it may not be the draw both squads need to assure advancement, I foresee an encounter with limited shot totals and chances. Even though that style goes against the way these sides traditionally play, the situation dictates that type of match.
Additionally, as the game goes longer and longer without a goal or with a tied scoreline, expect the Americans and Germans to be looking to stay as fresh as possible for their potential match-ups in the round of 16. Expect little pressure and pressing from each defence, and although this clash does have the potential for fireworks, don’t look for those o materialize.
While it’s not necessarily the German or American way, look for each team to do themselves a favour and play a very cautious game. I do foresee this match ending in a draw, but I think the safe wager lies on the Under 2.5, currently at a juicy plus-money price. Though the tactics may change depending on the Ghana/Portugal clash, bank on a low-scoring, low-chance affair to send both these teams through in Group G.
PICK = Under 2.5 (+110)
