Vitoria Guimaraes vs. Moreirense Pick – Portuguese Primeira Liga June 19, 2020

Vitoria Guimaraes will welcome Moreirense to Dom Afonso Henrique in Guimaraes, Portugal on Friday evening. Portugal just received good news, as they will host the final stages of the Champions League. That will take place from August 12 to August 23. The final match will be played at Estadio da Luz on August 23.

Istanbul was scheduled to host the Champions League, and they won’t miss out completely. Their hosting duties will be pushed back to next year. Lisbon is a beautiful city and it would make for a terrific trip in August. There is a chance that fans will be able to attend, so if you’re nearby and can make it out there, it’d make for a good time.

The Primeira Liga is not one of the elite European football leagues, but it’s still a high quality league that is probably about in the next tier behind the big boys like the Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, and Bundesliga. You can put the French Ligue 1 ahead of the Primiera Liga as well. In any case, Portuguese football is far better than what we had before, which was just the Belarusian Premier League.

Portugal is deep into their season with 27 or 26 matches in the books for all 18 clubs. Benfica and Porto are the class of the Primeira Liga in Portugal. They are the Barca and Real of this league, with everyone else far behind the two best teams in the country. There are about five teams well behind them that fit into the next tier. Benfica and Porto are tied with 64 points, while Sporting is next with 49 points for 3rd.

Vitoria SC, not to be confused with Vitoria FC, is stuck more in the middle as an average outfit. They possess a record of 10-9-7 with 39 points. Vitoria SC are coming off a 1-1 draw against Belenenses on June 11. It was their second game back, with the first match a 2-2 draw versus Sporting.

Moreirense won 1-0 and then a 1-0 defeat against Rio Ave last week. Rio has been neck and neck with Vitoria this season, so Moreirense play a similar opponent on Friday. Head below for our free Vitoria Guimaraes vs. Moreirense pick for June 19, 2020 in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

Vitoria Guimaraes vs. Moreirense Prediction:

Vitoria Guimaraes have had two missed opportunities since their return. They haven’t been in top form and had to settle for draws in their first two matches back. It did appear like Vitoria SC were shaking the rust off in their most recent match against Belenenses. They could have very easily won that game. Note that Vitoria SC had 15 shots in total as opposed to just 5 for their opponent. Vitoria notched a total of 6 shots on net, while Belanenese hit the net just twice. We can probably expect a similar performance for the Vitoria SC defence at home in this match against Moreirense.

The Moreirense offence has struggled to score on the road in 2019-20 in the Primeira Liga. They’ve scored just 1.15 goals per match, while scoring 1.35 goals per match on the season overall. I’m not highly confident in Moreirense piercing a Vitoria SC defence that has excelled at home. They have yielded an impressive 0.92 goals per match against visitors. The offence has seen some success as well, with 1.69 goals netted at home during this Primeira Liga campaign. Motivation must be noted in this match.

Moreirense have nothing to play for, while Vitoria SC can still qualify with a strong finish to the campaign. There is no threat of entering relegation, so Moreirense doesn’t have that to worry about on their plate. 3 points is imperative for Vitoria SC here. They have also won six straight matches against Moreirense at home, and with improvements noted in their last match, the rust should be gone for Vitoria SC. They are a better club than the previous two draws indicate. I’m on the home club to take care of business on Friday evening in northern Portugal.
