Wolfsburg vs. Borussia Dortmund Pick – Bundesliga Matchday 27 – May 23

One of the biggest revelations from last week’s Bundesliga restart, was just how great Borussia Dortmund can be. They were clinical in the famed Revierderby against their rivals, Schalke. An easy 4-0 win showed their power, and definitely had to put league leaders Bayern Munich on notice.

In order for Dortmund to put an end to Bayern Munich’s lengthy run atop the table, they can ill-afford to let points get away from them, and their opponent on Saturday represents exactly that. While Wolfsburg are a firm mid-table squad, they remain tough opposition for any Bundesliga group, and that should make for a fascinating clash on Saturday.

Dortmund eased back into the Bundesliga restart last week, with many of their renowned stars sitting out the match on the sidelines. With crucial contests coming up, especially Tuesday against Bayern Munich – getting rest has to be at a premium for the black and yellow. Wolfsburg meanwhile are coming off a narrow victory at Augsburg last week. The group continues to improve and can pose problems for most. They now sit in 6th position, desperately clinging onto one of the final European qualification positions.

All of this should result in an important showdown, and definitely one to watch in Matchday 27. It will surely have huge implications down the road, and heading into Tuesday’s top-of-the-table clash against Bayern Munich. Keep reading on beneath the odds for a detailed match breakdown and winning betting selection, as we look to keep our hot run in German soccer going.

Wolfsburg vs. Borussia Dortmund Pick:

While this is certainly a prime letdown spot for Dortmund with Bayern Munich looming on Tuesday, don’t expect one from the immensely deep and talented black and yellow side. With points at such a premium in a condensed sprint to the finish, if Dortmund doesn’t collect full points against Wolfsburg – it diminishes the importance of Tuesday’s prime encounter.

One big factor working to the advantage of Dortmund this weekend has to be their squad rotation and the rest key players gained last week against Schalke. Jadon Sancho sat out but is raring to go this weekend, and can be expected to lead the line against a shaky Wolfsburg defense.

Last time Wolfsburg ran into Dortmund’s lethal attack, Erling Haaland, Sancho, and midfield maestro Julian Brandt destroyed Wolfsburg’s back-three defense. The Wolves haven’t changed their tactics too much since, and though it works when taking on other teams – the skill, speed, and creativity of Dortmund is too much. Look for the Wolves to press high and hard in the midfield, and look for Dortmund’s sublime passing skills to tear them apart, making them vulnerable to chances against.

Though the Wolves have been playing well of late, collecting 15 of their past 21 points – they haven’t fared well against elite level competition, and a fully fit Dortmund side will be just that. Wolfsburg might shift into a 4-2-3-1, but their two holding midfielders in Xaver Schlager and Maximillian Arnold are nowhere near the quality to withstand a Dortmund onslaught. Look for the front three trio of Thorgan Hazard, Erling Haaland, and Jadon Sancho to have no difficulty in breaking down the Wolves’ back-line. Expect clinical passing and service from Julian Brandt to set up those three for all kinds of prime chances at goal.

One other big aspect playing to Dortmund’s advantage has to be that with new rules allowing five substitutions per team, that heavily favours a deep squad like Dortmund. And with a short mid-week set of clashes looming, look for Lucien Favre to use these strategically, and for them to pay dividends over a banged-up Wolfsburg.

The Wolves are a very solid club, and could make it difficult for some time against Dortmund. But Dortmund are second place in the table for a good reason. The squad’s overall skill, combined with key personnel returning should make this an easy three points for Lucien Favre’s group. Wolfsburg are undefeated in their past seven contests, but the depth in skill for Dortmund should allow for a comfortable victory, queuing up a classic showdown against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Prediction: Borussia Dortmund 3-1
