Cleveland Indians World Series Odds

2009 Article:

In 2008, like their AL Central Division foe Detroit Tigers, the Cleveland Indians fell far off their expectations and where the odds makers had placed them at the start of the year, in contention for a World Series title . The season began as a complete disaster, with injuries to key players Victor Martinez and Travis Hafner, and ended up with the trade of 2007 AL Cy Young Award Winner CC Sabathia. However, after the All Star Break, the Indians were able to play to form and ended up with an 81-81 record. In 2009, the Cleveland Indians look to rebound from last years disastrous season. The pitching rotation, though losing Sabathia, still has a strong front end with reigning Cy Young Winner Cliff Lee, and capable youngster Fausto Carmona. The line up is still somewhat of a question mark and it is still questionable whether Travis Hafner will ever return to from, as he has had a woeful spring training. Without him producing there will be a big hole in the middle of the order, hurting their chances of a World Series berth. Grady Sizemore and Johny Peralta will need to have banner 2009 seasons for Cleveland to compete if this is the case. Mark Derosa should help the lineup with his bat and with his glove, as he can play many different positions in case injuries do occur. The bullpen, which was the major contributor to the slow start in 2008, should be better. Kerry Wood has been brought in to take control of the closing duties, and if he remains healthy, should do a sufficient job. Expect Rafael Betancourt to rebound from a horrible 2009 season and other youngsters, such as Jenson Lewis, should thrive with the experience of last year.

When looking at the odds of the Cleveland Indians winning the 2009 World Series, they are listed at +1600. This would mean that placing a $100 bet on the Indians to win the World Series would pay out $1700. In my opinion the Indians would be a decent choice to win the World Series in 2009 for a few reasons. The first is that they are in the AL Central Division, which in recent years has been wide open, as every team in the division other than Kansas City has had success. This should give betters hope that Cleveland can rebound from a sub par 2008. Also, the Indians made the most moves of everyone in the AL Central to improve their lineup, via both free agency and trades, with the acquistitions of Wood, Derosa and Anthony Reyes. Finally, the Indians have experience rebounding from bad seasons, as 2006 was also a losing year for the team, but in 2007, they were able to make a run deep into the postseason. In my opinion, the odds on the Indians make them a quite enticing bet as they do have an excellent chance of making the post season and World Series in 2009, as they have decent pitching and the potential in their batting order.
