Diego Schwartzman vs. Benoit Paire Pick – ATP Madrid Open May 2, 2022

The Round of 64 begins on Monday from Madrid for the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain. This is an ATP Masters 1000 event with some heavyweights participating in the tournament.

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic land in Madrid for some prep work ahead of the French Open. It’s the perfect tournament to put in work on the clay before the only clay Grand Slam on the ATP Tour.

Nadal had been dealing with a rib fracture, but appears in good spirits entering Madrid. He had a leg problem, seemed to overcome that injury as Nadal was in great form earlier this year.

Nadal is going to be well-liked to win the Madrid Open. He’s fresh and likes the clay. Of course, Djokovic is going to attract public money as well. In these types of events, don’t expect a full effort from top stars, though.

They like to keep something in the reserves for a tournament like the French Open. Upsets happen when motivation is lopsided in these smaller tournaments. Diego Schwartzman might be one to pull off an upset or two.

The No. 15 player in the world has to be a worthy contender to win the Madrid Open. Schwartzman can play like a top-5 player when he is focused and loves the clay.

Schwartzman faces an opponent he should handle convincingly, but that’s why they play the matches. Benoit Paire has an uphill battle on his hands Monday in Madrid.

Paire needs one of the best performances of his career to stay in this one and a puncher’s chance at advancing to the Round of 32. Head below for our free Diego Schwartzman vs. Benoit Paire prediction on May 2, 2022.

Diego Schwartzman vs. Benoit Paire Prediction:

This should be a tough matchup for Benoit Paire, who is in a tough spot against a clay specialist. Diego Schwartzman is best on the clay and has serious claims to go the distance in Madrid.

He has been in good form with a record of 14-5 on the clay in 2022. Schwartzman has won 30 sets in 47 sets going into Monday.

It just feels like a terrible draw for Paire, who probably wishes Schwartzman wasn’t in his way in the Round of 64. Schwartzman is coming off a decent showing in Barcelona, but Pablo Carreno Busta was too much.

He had won three matches, with six sets won and just one lost before Carreno Busta presented a tough challenge after Schwartzman edged out a talented youngster Felix Auger Aliassime.

Carreno Busta sent Schwartzman home with a 6-3, 6-4 final. In his first match since then, expect Schwartzman to respond well in the Round of 64 in Madrid.

He should make it look easy against Paire, who hasn’t been much of a threat on the clay. He’s coming off two wins in the qualifying Round, but Schwartzman is a massive step up in class.

Paire was winless in six matches on the clay before two qualifying wins to get to the Round of 64. There isn’t much to say for his 2022 form overall either.

Paire owns an overall record of 4-12 in 2022 following wins over Brandom Nakashima and Federico Coria, both in three sets. This is going to prove to be much more difficult against one of the better clay players on the ATP Tour.

Schwartzman is in a good position to clear easily on Monday, but laying 5 looks too steep in my book. The UNDER is essentially a bet on Schwartzman to win this match quickly. Look for a 6-3, 6-4 win to keep this UNDER 20.5.
