Francisco Cerundolo vs. Gael Monfils Pick – ATP Miami Open March 27, 2022

The ATP Miami Open rolls on Sunday with the Round of 32. The tournament will conclude a week from today at Hard Rock Stadium.

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are absent from the Miami Open, but Daniil Medvedev is in Florida with a big opportunity to re-take the No. 1 ranking in the world.

If Medvedev wins, he should take over top honors from Djokovic. The way is likely clear for Joker to immediately get it right back at the French Open, though.

Medvedev has cruised so far in the Miami Open. In his most recent match, he cleared Andy Murray without any problems in a 6-4, 6-2 game on Saturday.

On Sunday, we’re handicapping the Francisco Cerundolo and Gael Monfils match at Hard Rock in our look at the Miami Open odds board.

Monfils has been in good form since his Australian Open bid in January. He made the most of that tournament after winning his first three matches.

In a tough match against Italian Matteo Berrettini, Monfils lost in five sets, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, 2-6 after running out of gas. A set away from a three-set sweep, Monfils couldn’t put Berrettini away.

Monfils got to the Round of 32 with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Oscar Otte. The No. 22 ranked native of France has to like his chances on Sunday.

Unraked, Cerundolo, pulled off a big upset over No. 16 Reilly Opelka after the favorite retired from the match. Opelka was battling a shoulder injury and couldn’t keep going after getting down 6-1, 3-1.

Something was clearly wrong with Opelka, as he was never himself in that match. Cerundolo can’t depend on the same happening in the Round of 32.

Francisco Cerundolo vs. Gael Monfils Prediction:

Francisco Cerundolo doesn’t have much experience at the ATP level. The 23-year-old is looking to get more involved in ATP competition, mostly spending his time versus inferior opponents in the Challenger Series.

His goal right now is to move up into the top-100 of the world rankings. Cerndolo is currently ranked No. 103 globally, going into the Miami Open. A win against Gael Monfils would give him a good chance of moving up.

Cerundolo hasn’t played a player of Monfils’ caliber well in his career. You can argue Opelka, but he was dealing with a busted shoulder in that match. Cerundolo likely isn’t going to get off that easy tonight.

Monfils is ranked No. 24 in the world entering this one at Hard Rock Stadium. In the Indian Wells last tournament, he was moving well before Carlos Alcaraz cut him down in a 5-7, 1-6 final.

Alcaraz is No. 19 in the world and is hot at the moment. Monfils responded for a comfortable 7-6, 6-1 win over No. 74 Oscar Otte. His experience should be too much for Cerundolo in this match.

Monfils has made easy work of inferior foes recently. He won nine straight sets at the Australian Open in his first three matches before seeing Berrettini.

This assignment looks too tough for Cerundolo, but it should be a good learning experience for the 23-year-old. I’m looking at Monfils to win and cover the number in the Round of 32 at the Miami Open.
