The Halle Open rolls on Friday with quarterfinal matches in Germany. There are four matches in Halle today, with Oscar Otte and Karen Khachanov opening the day. Our pick to win it all is alive and playing well.
Daniil Medvedev won his second match of the tournament, as he beat Ilya Ivashka, 7-6, 6-3. Medvedev’s service was too much to handle, with ten aces versus just two aces for Ivashka. That was the difference in the match.
Medvedev was coming off a tough upset in the Netherlands before the Halle Open. He committed four double faults, which was unusual for him and still won by four games.
He can’t afford to give himself self-inflicting wounds against tougher opponents in the future in this tournament, though. A foe like Hurkacz and Auger-Aliassime could give Medvedev a good fight.
I had Auger-Aliassime on my radar before the tournament began. For his value to win the Halle Open, Auger-Aliassime had to be worth a look in the +750 range.
Hurkacz is more than a willing challenger, though. This isn’t going to be an easy assignment for the Canadian.
Hurkacz is the No. 5 seed in the tournament, while Auger-Aliassime is the No. 4 player in the Halle Open. The Pole is coming off a straight-set win over Uga Humbert, 7-6, 6-3. Auger-Aliassime beat Mackenzie McDonald in the Round of 16, 7-6, 6-1.

Hurkacz vs. Auger-Aliassime Prediction:
These two players followed a similar path to the quarterback at the Halle Open. Hurkacz beat Maxime Cressy in three sets to open the tournament, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. It was a tight game, statistically, with one glaring difference.
Cressy couldn’t get away from making mistakes. He committed 11 double faults to hang a lot of gaves over to Hurkacz.
If Cressy doesn’t make those errors, it’s likely a win for him. Hurkacz is fortunate he got out of that one.
He was in control with complete command of his next opponent, though. Hurkacz swept Humbert with a much better performance, 7-6, 6-3.
Service from the Canadian was far too much for Giron. He defeated a pesky Marcos Giron by a final of 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Auger-Aliassime smacked 11 aces compared to just 1 for Giron.
Then, just like Hurkackz, Auger-Aliassime won his next match in straight sets as well. He cleared Mackenzie McDonald, 7-6, 6-1 with 14 aces to none for McDonald.
That match was completely lopsided, as McDonald was in over his head against the big-serving Auger-Aliassime. Things went as expected.
They met in the Halle Open last year on the grass, with Auger-Aliassime advancing by five games over Hurkacz. Auger-Aliassime were both at their best in their latest match, and I think this one plays closer.
Humbert isn’t the weakest opponent and Hurkackz looked pretty good last round. Despite two double faults and none for Hurkacz, he still won fairly easily.
This should be one of the more entertaining quarterfinal matches at the Halle Open. I’d look for this one to go more than 24 games.
