Iga Swiatek vs. Alison Riske Pick – WTA French Open May 26, 2022

The WTA French Open continues on Thursday with the second round at Roland Garros. In the first round, Naomi Osaka exited the French Open with a 5-7, 4-6 loss to Amanda Anisimova. Osaka is one and done in Paris.

Another notable early loss was Bianca Andreescu, as she was chased out in the second round. The 2019 US Open winner hasn’t been able to duplicate that form since then. Osaka and Andreescu weren’t even ranked in the French Open, but still, garner media attention.

Serena Williams opted to pass on the French Open and work towards Wimbledon in the summer. If Williams were in Paris at Roland Garros, you would have known by now if you follow sports. They won’t get enough of her in London at Wimbledon.

The woman that should be getting most of the attention on the WTA Tour is Polish superstar, Iga Swiatek. Despite how good of a player Swiatek is she doesn’t get the most face time.

She isn’t getting the recognition that a player of her caliber deserves for a player who has a good chance of sweeping the Grand Slam schedule in 2022. It’s going to be too hard to ignore her with Ash Barty retired from tennis.

Swiatek is the clear No. 1 player on the WTA Tour.

With Barty trying something new and getting away from tennis, Swiatek has no competition at the moment. Upsets happen, though, and the best do lose if they’re not focused and prepared.

Alison Riske will attempt to be the first player to beat Swiatek since she lost on February 16 in Dubai. Riske is coming off a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 82 Dayana Yastremska in the first round.

Swiatek is tenfold the challenge that Tastremska presents for Riske. This is a major step up in class.

The No. 1 on the WTA Tour is coming off another cakewalk win, this time over Lesia Tsurenko. Swiatek breezed to a 6-2, 6-0 win.

Iga Swiatek vs. Alison Riske Prediction:

There hasn’t been a player on the WTA Tour to stop Iga Swiatek in a long time. On Thursday, she is looking for her 30th straight singles win at Roland Garros.

Swiatek won 24 of these matches in straight sets to make her winning streak even more impressive. She’s won 2-0 in seven straight matches and 20 of her previous 21 attempts.

That’s not just good form; that is incredible form that puts her well out of reach in the WTA Tour rankings in this shape. Winning at that successful clip means plenty of titles along the way.

Swiatek has won the last five tournaments that she’s entered.

Note that Swiatek isn’t just winning in straight sets, but doing it in a quick fashion. She’s won five of her last seven matches by at least eight games.

Swiatek won seven straight matches in straight sets after a rare third set versus Ludmilla Samsonova in the Stuttgart Open. In her current form, Riske has a heck of a challenge in this one.

Swiatek is 36-3 in 39 matches compared to 11-9 in 20 matches for Riske in 2022. In their only full match, the Pole won easily 6-1, 6-1 in Madrid on April 29 against Riske.

While Riske won her French Open opener with ease against Yastremska, she generally hasn’t been reliable on the clay. She is 2-2 this year and just 6-15 since 2018.

The win for Riske in the first round was her first clay win in four years. She went 0-8 on this surface from 2019 to 2021.

Meanwhile, Swiatek can win anywhere and on any surface. She is 10-0 on a clay court this year and 29-3 since 2020.

Swiatek needs Barty back for a challenge. Riske isn’t providing it at Roland Garros on Thursday, nor may any player in the French Open.

Swiatek to win 6-2, 6-1 for an easy second round for Swiatek looks likely on Thursday afternoon in Paris. Her forehand will be too much to counter once again.
