Mikael Ymer vs. Emil Ruusuvuori Pick – ATP Citi Open August 4, 2022

The ATP Citi Open continues on Thursday afternoon with the Round of 16 in Washington. There are eight matches scheduled throughout the day, as we get closer to championship weekend for the Citi Open. The first match begins at noon, while Andrey Rublev and Maxime Cressy meet in what should be a good one in the evening hours.

This isn’t a marquee tournament, but rather a good warm-up for the US Open which is quickly approaching. The US Open will take place from August 29 to September 11 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Elite players like Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are not participating, though you can find Daniil Medvedev in Mexico at the ATP Los Cabos. Nick Kyrgios, Taylor Fritz, and Andrey Rublev are in Washington.

The No. 2 seed of the Citi Open was chased out of Washington yesterday afternoon. Hubert Hurkacz was the favorite over Emil Ruusuvuori, but he was upset in straight sets.

Hurkacz got off to a bad start and never recovered after a 4-6 loss in the first set.

Ruusuvuori and Hurkacz went to a tiebreaker in a back and forth the second set, with Hurkacz worn down by the 23-year-old in a 7-3 tiebreaker. There was a moment when it looked like Hurkacz was going to flip the match around, but the Finnish player pushed back.

After that performance, Ruusuvuori has to be regarded as a top contender to win the Citi Open. An outsider has a tendency to win these smaller tournaments, and Ruusuvuori could be the guy this time.

This is a Scandanavian matchup between Mikael Ymer and Ruusuvuori. Ymer is the top-rated Swedish player in the world, while Ruusuvuori is the top-rated Finnish player on the ATP Tour. There is sure to be a rivalry between Sweden and Finland in this one at Rock Creek.

Ymer vs. Ruusuvuori Prediction:

Emil Ruusuvuori is the No. 46 player in the world and has done well to move up the board. The 23-year-old still has time to grow and become a better player as well. He has to learn to be a more consistent player, though.

Consistently beating a highly ranked player like Hurkacz is not the norm for Ruusuvouri.

That’s not to say Ruusuvuori can’t become that kind of player, though. He has some solid tools in his arsenal.

Ruusuvuori edged away in the first set and never allowed Hurkacz to break serve. Hurkacz was able to protect his service game in the second set, but was still unable to break Ruusuvuori.

Again, consistency has to be at the forefront, though. He had an impressive win at the German Open against a top seed as well. Ruusuvuori beat Diego Schwartzman, 7-5, 6-4, but faltered in the next round to Lorenzo Musetti on July 20, 4-6, 5-7.

My concern with Ruusuvuori is that he’s going to pull this same act and fail to continue in the same form.

Mikael Ymer is coming off two strong performances for upsets against Andy Murray and Aslan Karatsev. He’s a young 23-year-old that has room to grow as well.

Ymer beat Murray in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1, and then followed up over the No. 15 seed and No. 36 in the world with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win.

In two meetings between Ruusuvuori and Ymer, both matches needed three sets to decide a winner. Ruusuvuori won both, but Ymer didn’t go down without a battle.

The Swede came up short in a 6-4, 1-6, 5-7, and 6-1, 4-6, 3-6 final to Ruusuvuori. They most recently had a match at ATP Bastad last year. Expect more close work between these two Scandanavian players on Thursday afternoon.
