Nick Kyrgios vs. Roberto Bautista-Agut Pick – ATP Mallorca Open June 22, 2022

Nick Kyrgios survived Laslo Dere in the first round and is on to the Round of 16 against Roberto Bautista-Agut. It wasn’t Kyrgios’ best work, but he was able to avoid the upset and defeat Dere. Kyrgios is at his best on the grass and has been playing better tennis recently despite a loss to Hubert Hurkacz at Halle.

Kyrgios made it to the semifinal, but couldn’t get past Hurkacz, who ultimately bypassed favorite Daniil Medvedev in the final round. The Aussie came closer to beating Hurkacz than Medvedev was able to do on Sunday.

Because of his Russian citizenship, Medvedev will be unable to enter the upcoming Wimbledon tournament. He has been left frustrated the last two weeks after reaching the final round and being denied without much resistance in both instances.

Medvedev is back on the grass for the Mallorca Open in Spain. There are some fairly big players in this tournament, but the real attention is on Wimbledon, which is getting closer in London.

Kyrgios is playing well and most importantly he is focused with Wimbledon approaching.

He has talent, but too often, Kyrgios doesn’t use it properly because he isn’t prepared or motivated. At least over the last two weeks, he’s focused on tennis and not drawing attention to himself for his eccentric antics.

He faces a worthy challenger in Roberto Bautista-Agut in the Round of 16. Bautista-Agut is playing on his home turf in Spain in this tournament.

Bautista-Agut is coming off a 6-4, 7-6 win over Taro Daniel in the Round of 32. He had the day off yesterday, while Kyrgios was in action. We’ll see if that helps to his advantage this afternoon in beautiful Mallorca.

Nick Kyrgios vs. Roberto Bautista-Agut Prediction:

Nick Kyrgios gave Hubert Hurkacz a pretty good match in the Halle Open. He committed several unforced errors and double faults to sink his chances. Kyrgios would go on to lose the match by a final of 6-4, 6-7, 6-7.

In his defense, nobody ended up beating Hurkacz in the Halle Open, as he went on to beat Daniil Medvedev in the final round. Kyrgios responded with a 5-7, 7-6, 7-6 win over Laslo Dere in his first-round Mallorca Open match.

I thought Kyrgios could have been better and not needed that long to beat Dere, but he did what was required to advance.

He has had a lot of success on the grass over the last two years. Kyrgios is 7-2 on the grass this year with the win yesterday afternoon.

The Aussie is 9-3 over the last two years playing on a grass surface and 18-9 in the last five years of his career.

In any case, Kyrgios is unseeded in the Mallorca Open, while Bautista-Agut is the fifth seed but still favored. Bautista-Agut should be a solid challenger in a match that likely goes the distance.

Bautista-Agut cleared Daniel fairly easily in his first match of the Mallorca Open. His loss in the Halle Open was to Medvedev, 2-6, 4-6 following easy wins versus Marton Fucsovics and Tallon Griekspoor.

Bautista-Agut returned for his first tournament since early May at the Halle Open. That was a good assignment for him to shake off the rust. He’s been in fine form on the grass, with a record of 17-7 over the last five years.

Bautista-Agut has two wins in three matches versus Kyrgios and beat him last year in the US Open in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-0. This should be closer on the grass, with Kyrgios feeling more comfortable.

Expect both players to have their moments in this one. If it doesn’t go three sets, it’s probably a tight two-set match. Looking at the OVER isn’t a bad option between Kyrgios and Bautista-Agut.
