Novak Djokovic vs. Rafael Nadal Pick – ATP French Open May 31, 2022

In the most highly anticipated matchup of the French Open, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will meet at Roland Garros in the quarterfinal. There is going to be as much interest in this matchup as there will be for the French Open Final.

Djokovic and Nadal are two of the best players in the modern era of tennis. Nadal has been a king in the French Open, with a record 13 titles at Roland Garros. He is a champion on the clay, and there hasn’t been anyone better than him.

Having said that, Djokovic has improved on the clay throughout his career. He’s the defending French Open winner and has two titles on his resume.

Djokovic has won a total of 20 Grand Slam titles in his career. He’s looked untouchable over the last few weeks, but the French Open is still Nadal’s signature tournament. Nadal checks in with 21 Grand Slams, so the Serb can tie Nadal with a French Open title in 2022.

Djokovic is on cruise control, while Nadal had to battle past Auger-Aliassime in five sets.

Nadal and Auger-Aliassime also got into a thrilling matchup in the Australian Open, with Nadal edging past the pesky Canadian. Besides this close matchup, Nadal made it look easy versus his first three opponents.

Auger-Aliassime was the first notable opponent that Nadal played in the French Open. No. 26 Botic van de Zandschlup was his only other ranked foe.

Nadal had some injury concerns going into the French Open, but he appears to be over the foot problem that hampered him against Denis Shapovalov in Rome. At least for the moment. It’s something that is likely to flare up at some point again.

Novak Djokovic vs. Rafael Nadal Prediction:

Rafael Nadal is not playing at 100% in the French Open. He may not be showing it in matches, but Nadal’s foot has to be throbbing. Only two weeks ago, Nadal was limping against Shapovalov in Rome and lost 6-1, 5-7, 2-6.

Nadal fought through the pain to finish the match, but left that tournament earlier than he would have wished.

He didn’t have to break much of a sweat through his first three opponents. Nadal beat Jodan Thompson, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, following up over Corentin Moutet, 6-3, 6-1, 6-4. His first ranked opponent Botic van de Zandschulp provided no challenger, either.

Nadal looked like prime Nadal with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win in that one. However, then he faced real competition in the fourth round.

Auger-Aliassime made Nadal work for the win in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 final. Nadal is going to have to be better this time in the quarterfinal. Djokovic is in pretty much perfect form going into this match.

Four matches into the French Open, Nadal’s foot has to be bothering him even if he isn’t going to admit it.

Djokovic is equaling some of the best tennis he’s played in his career at the moment. After losing to Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic has been on fire with nine straight wins.

They aren’t just nine straight wins; he’s won in straight sets in every matchup. After winning the Italian Open without losing a set, Djokovic isn’t stopping in Paris.

He’s won 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, 6-2, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. The first three matches were expected to be simple, but Diego Schwartzman didn’t have anything to offer, either.

Schwartzman was chased off the court with Djokovic clearing easily 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. Schwartzman is one of the better clay players on the ATP Tour, though Djokovic made it look too easy.

The crowds have been against Djokovic in Paris, but it’s only making him fire back harder.

He will overwhelmingly have the crowd against him at Roland Garros versus Nadal. At 100%, Nadal will probably give Djokovic a match that goes down to the wire. However, this should be tough in Djokovic’s current form and Nadal not at 100%.

As much as I’d like to support Nadal, he looks like the next victim for Djokovic in Paris. After dispatching a clay specialist in Schwartzman, expect Djokovic to do it again. This should be closer than 6-1, 6-3, 6-3, but Djokovic should prevail by 6 games to win and cover.
