Oscar Otte vs. Matteo Berrettini Pick – ATP Stuttgart Open June 11, 2022

Oscar Otte and Matteo Berrettini are off to the semifinals of the Stuttgart Open on Saturday. Otte didn’t have to do anything to get to the semis after a walkover from the quarterfinal.

Benjamin Bonzi had to withdraw from the tournament, allowing Otte a free pass to face Berrettini. Otte was in great shape for his first two matches in the Stuttgart Open.

He deserved the wins and isn’t in the semifinal because of a mistake. Otte will see a tougher challenge against the Italian in this round.

The Stuttgart open is on the grass, so this is a nice tune-up for players looking to play in Wimbledon. Berrettini had been absent from the tennis court after suffering a hand injury. He skipped the French Open to be sure it was completely healed.

Berrettini played his first match since March in the Stuttgart Open. He was scheduled to play the Miami Open, but didn’t make it to his first match. Berrettini exited before his opener.

Berrettini needed three sets to win his first two matches in the Stuttgart Open, but was never in danger of losing.

Otte must have some confidence going into this one after beating Denis Shapovalov in straight sets. Shapo was the No. 4 player in this tournament, but looked overmatched against Otte.

That’s a bad loss for the Canadian, but credit Otte for his top form. He deserved the win and now is coming off a small break.

Berrettini was playing a quarterfinal match against Lorenzo Sonego yesterday, while Otte sat down and rested for his next opponent. This is the third time Berrettini and Otte have met in their careers, most recently in a US Open match last year.

Oscar Otte vs. Matteo Berrettini Prediction:

Oscar Otte is battling hard, just like he did in his first two matches against Berrettini. Otte opened the Stuttgart Open with a 7-6, 7-6 win over fellow German Daniel Altmaier.

Otte followed up in similar form, though this time, he needed just a little more to get past a better player in Denis Shapovalov. It was the same result, with Otte winning in straight sets, 7-6, 7-6.

This match sets up nicely for Otte to spring an upset after coming close twice to beating Berrettini.

Berrettini has been good, but he’s not yet up to his standard form. He needed three sets to beat Radu Albot in his Stuttgart Open Round of 16 match.

Berrettini covered the match with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, but he looked beatable in the second set. His next opponent was a tougher foe, but won in three sets by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 after a rocky first set.

Otte hasn’t been an easy out for Berrettini in the past. They went to four sets at the 2021 US Open and three years earlier at Roland Garros.

Berrettini won at the French Open in 2018 by a score of 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1, and then they didn’t meet until three years later at the US Open. The Italian did the same with a four-set 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win.

Otte hasn’t played many matches on the grass, but has nevertheless been strong.

He is 4-1 in five career grass surface matches and 3-0 this year. Otte hasn’t lost a set on the grass thus far in 2022. He should be confident and fresh after beating Shapovalov and skipping the next round.

Berrettini winning looks likely, but you will have to pay a high cost at -300 on the moneyline. I could see Otte giving him a solid enough battle, though.

A 2 or 3-game win for Berrettini is probably where this one goes on Saturday. With the spread at 2.5 or 3 games, that’s cutting it close. However, there should be 24 or more games, making the OVER an option.
