The ATP Stuttgart Open is down to the Round of 16 in Germany on Wednesday afternoon. This is a short ATP 250 series tournament, with some well-known players like Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal taking a pass.
Following a French Open win and then deciding to play in Germany for a 250-series tournament, that would have been something else. Yeah, right. If you know tennis, there are still some recognizable names in this one.
After a disappointing French Open, Stafanos Tsitsipas accepted an invite to play in the Stuttgart Open. He was bounced off the clay, his specilaity, in an upset against Holger Rune.
This is a tournament that Tsitsipas has to win for it to be a success. Anything less against this competition, and it’s going to be a failure for him. That said, Tsitsipas isn’t the only dangerous talent in this tournament.
The Italian is the No. 2 seed, while Hubert Hurkacz and Denis Shapovalov are the next top contenders to win the Stuttgart Open. Berrettini will open his tournament on Wednesday against Radu Albot.
Albot has already played three matches in the Stuttgart Open. He needed to win two qualifying matches and then the Round of 32 against Joao Sousa.
Berrettini hasn’t played a full match since the Indian Wells in March. He withdrew from the Miami Open with a right-hand injury and will finally make his return in Germany.

Radu Albot vs. Matteo Berrettini Prediction:
Radu Albot has been in good form going into the Round of 16 against Matteo Berrettini. However, this is a massive jump in class for him against the No. 10 player in the world. His three wins were versus Oscar Moraing, Quentin Halys, and Joao Sousa.
Moraing is 669th, Halys 88th, and Sousa 63rd in the world. He’s going from those three to Berrettini, who is currently No. 10 on the ATP Tour. In any case, Albot did what was required of him to get to the Round of 16.
He was walked over to the Round of 32 after Halys dropped out of the match after Albot was down 2-1 in the first set. Albot is the 121st ranked player globally, so beating Sousa was an accomplishment for him.
Albot had lost 9 of 14 single’s matches before winning three in a row in the Stuttgart Open.
Berrettini hasn’t played a full match since March, but you could argue that he will be fresh for Albot. I don’t know if a warm-up will be required against an opponent that he has in the Round of 16.
He has been dominant on the grass in his career. Some players prefer the clay over the hard court and vice-versa. For Berrettini, he’s at his best on the grass.
Berrettini is 24-4 on the grass since 2019. In his first match on a grass surface this year, he shouldn’t have too many problems dispatching Albot. My Albot vs. Berrettini prediction is the Italian to romp 6-4, 6-2 in his comeback to the court.
