Will Justin Fields Play for the New York Jets Again After Benching, and Owner Scolding?

  • Justin Fields was benched by New York Jets’ head coach Aaron Glenn at halftime of a 13-6 loss to Carolina.
  • The Jets are 0-7 and a quarterback change is likely after Jets’ owner Woody Johnson criticized Fields’ performance.
  • The odds aren’t good that we’ll see Fields playing for the Jets anytime soon.

The winless New York Jets are likely looking to switch quarterbacks, as Justin Fields has struggled, and veteran Tyrod Taylor will probably take his spot.

Owner Woody Johnson ripped Fields’ performance in an interview, and it’s unlikely that Fields will play for the team again.

Jets Likely to Switch to Taylor After Johnson Comments

Johnson made the comments during the NFL fall meeting on Tuesday.

Johnson claimed:

“I mean, he has ability, but something just is not jiving. … You have to play consistently at that position, and that's what we're going to try to do for the remainder of the season."

That means that head coach Aaron Glenn will likely have to change quarterbacks, and he was probably moving in that direction anyway. Glenn benched Fields at halftime of a 13-6 loss to Carolina, in which the former Ohio State quarterback was 6-of-12 for 46 yards, along with 22 rushing yards on four carries.

Veteran Tyrod Taylor replaced Fields and went 10-of-22 for 126 yards and two interceptions. Yet, it looks like he’ll be the starter for the Jets’ NFL Week 8 matchup against Cincinnati. The Jets then have a bye week to figure out their next move.

But is it over for Fields and the Jets for good?

Will Justin Fields Play for the New York Jets Again?

The Jets gave Fields a two-year deal for $40 million in the offseason, and $30 million was guaranteed. If they were to cut Fields, they would likely suffer some sort of dead-cap hit.

But it doesn’t seem like Fields can play for the Jets again after the public lambasting by their owner. Fields is the latest in a long line of quarterback problems for the Jets, and they may have to look within. It’s especially difficult when they look to Pittsburgh and see 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers playing much better than he did for the Jets last season.

The Jets’ Super Bowl odds will be a non-starter until they figure out a solution at quarterback. At some point, Johnson has to realize that the Jets are the common denominator in the above list. Sam Darnold has gone on to have success in Minnesota and now, Seattle. Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick were good after they left the Jets. They just can’t keep blaming the quarterbacks they select for their issues.

But after this public humiliation, Justin Fields and the New York Jets should go their separate ways.
