Is Bovada a Legit Site to bet on Sports?

It’s very important to choose only the safest and most trustworthy sports betting sites on the Internet. Those who have proven themselves for years. Everyone wants to know they will have no problem getting paid and that the sportsbook they trust with their money will be around tomorrow.

As a staple in the industry for quite some time, Bovada has been known for being one of the most reliable and fastest paying sports betting options available to US players and the rest of the world. With an absolute killer variety when it comes to sports betting options, you can find action on pretty much any sport you’d ever even think about placing a bet on. Bovada also boasts a simple to use live betting platform for those that are fans of in-game betting. The user interface on desktop and on mobile is slick and clearly designed with user friendliness in mind. While there are some critiques of the dual lines offered, this seems to be an advantage for recreational players more than a disadvantage to professional bettors.

For those that need a little more action in their life, Bovada also offers a full-scale online casino and all the action you could ever want on the ponies. While the casino does not have the hundreds of game options that you might find elsewhere, it certainly has plenty for the casual and semi-serious players. Expect to find all of your favorites and the most popular variations of games. The casino also has mini-games that can be played from the live betting screen so you can get some extra action in without missing a beat with your in-game bets.

Overall, we were fairly pleased with what we saw from Bovada. It’s hard not to be a fan of a site that services the entire world and has done so reliably for many years. In this review, we’re going to dig into the things that we really liked about the site and also the things that we would like to see improvement on. We do our best to give you the most honest and accurate review of online sites so that you can make a more informed decision on where you want to place your hard earned money. So if you’re ready, buckle up and let’s dive into the world of Bovada.

The Sportsbook

The flagship product of Bovada Online is, of course, their sportsbook. With a great array of game offerings, you’re sure to find whatever it is you’re looking to wager on. The other thing that initially stood out to us besides the variety of sports you could bet on was the interface. It’s a clean and well-organized interface that makes finding what you’re looking for really simple. The site also has a great mobile platform that makes betting away from your computer quick and simple as well.

Sports You Can Bet On

  • Basketball
  • Baseball
  • Hockey
  • Soccer
  • Tennis
  • Golf
  • Football
  • Cricket
  • Boxing
  • Politics
  • Horse Racing
  • Motor Sports
  • eSports
  • Rugby League
  • Rugby Union
  • Snooker
  • Darts
  • Cycling
  • Volleyball
  • Beach Volleyball
  • Aussie Rules
  • Handball
  • Futsal
  • Table Tennis
  • Winter Sports

Within each of these main categories were several different sports only adding to more and more variety. Pretty much anything that you could want to bet on seems to be offered on the site.

Live Betting

Bovada also offers a very clean and simple to use live betting section that we were big fans of. Lines looked to be updated extremely quickly, and the entire interface was easy to navigate. When we looked, they had all of the big games currently going on including several smaller niche sports that you may be interested in. Bet types included point spreads, moneyline bets, and totals. They also had a lot of prop bets that were being updated in real time which looked to be a lot of fun.

The betting interface itself looked to be very easy to use and made it where you could get your bets in quickly without a lot of unnecessary steps. This is crucial when dealing with live in-game betting as the odds can change quickly and you can possibly miss a bet. The site also has a mode called Quick Bet which allows you to place your bets with only one click to ensure you don’t miss anything.

In addition to the live in-game betting, they also had the ability for you to play casino mini games on the side of the screen. If you’re someone who enjoys sweating the different lines but needs something to keep you busy during the breaks and timeouts, this is ideal.

A Critique to Note

One thing that professional sports bettors have been critical of with Bovada are their dual lines. If you’re a recreational player (as deemed by them), you’ll get very attractive betting lines. If they deem you a professional, you’ll get slightly less attractive lines that are a bit more on par with the industry average. While these will vary by sport, it’s probably best to view this as an advantage for recreational bettors instead of a disadvantage for professional bettors. Your best bet is to join a few different sportsbooks so you can always shop lines and choose to bet where you get the best odds. This is the best tip any successful sports bettor will tell you has to be done to succeed in the industry.

We dug a bit further on this, and it looks like this only affects some individual games. It doesn’t look to affect parlay payouts or anything like that, but just the odds on a select few individual games. For example, these are the posted parlay payouts for ANY type of better.

Parlay Size Payouts
2-Team 2.645/1
3-Team 5.958/1
4-Team 12.283/1
5-Team 24.359/1
6-Team 47.413/1
7-Team 91.424/1
8-Team 175.446/1
9-Team 335.852/1
10-Team 642.082/1
11-Team 1226.701/1
12-Team 2342.793/1

Again, your absolute best strategy is to have multiple different sportsbook accounts and just shop lines for the games you want to bet.

Odds Posting Schedule

While researching the site online, we saw some older complaints about odds being posted late. It looks like Bovada heard these issues and has now posted a fixed schedule of when they are going to release their odds. User Interface

The best word we could find to describe the interface of Bovada is fantastic. If you’ve read any of our other reviews, you’ll know that this can be the section we are the most critical about because it is one of the most important areas to us. If your site is hard to navigate and difficult to get your bets placed, you’re going to be more prone to making betting mistakes and have a terrible time. Sports betting is supposed to be fun, relaxing, and hopefully profitable and all of those things can’t happen if a site has a cruddy user interface.

The signup process was easy and straightforward and looks to be well suited for people of all experience levels with online gaming. If this is your first time signing up, this may be a great site to try as they do walk you through everything clearly and at your own pace. Regarding the actual betting platform, the sports are organized nicely with a vertical menu on the left-hand side of your screen that pops open into the main screen when you select a sport.

Bets are easy to figure out, and for once it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out how to get your action going. What we did like is that when you select a bet, it always pops up on the right-hand fold of the screen and shows you exactly what you will win for your potential wager. If you want to roll that bet into a parlay, you just select another bet and click the parlay option. They’ve really set it up nicely with the end user in mind.

The live betting portal is awesome and very user-friendly. This is extremely important because speed is key when placing your bets. The one click betting option is set up nicely and makes for super fast bets. You can also cycle through sports quickly without having to close the current window and open a new one. Everything happens in the same place for a much better user experience.

The site’s mobile platform is highly touted and makes for a great experience if you are looking to bet on the go. Easy to use and also set up for speed, you won’t have to worry about getting lost finding your bets or taking forever to place your bets. There’s nothing like being at the bar for the game and wanting to stick in a last minute or in-game bet and not being able to. Thankfully, Bovada lets you do this and lets you do it quickly, so you don’t have to miss any of the action.

Regarding the casino interface, the quality continues here. All of the games are high quality, and you can tell they spent a few bucks to get quality. Gameplay and the controls for each game are straightforward and again don’t take a rocket scientist to figure out.

Overall, the interface is a home run for Bovada. We really couldn’t find anywhere that we would like to see much improvement (which is rare). Easy navigation and user-friendly controls shouldn’t be that hard, but apparently, a lot of sites just can’t figure it out. Kudos for Bovada for being ahead of the game.

The Casino

The casino and horse betting portal at Bovada are pretty good but clearly come second to the sports betting at the site. What’s interesting is that most of their bigger bonus promotions push for the casino, yet it looks like they concentrate most of their efforts on the sportsbook. This is probably because sharp bettors can have an edge in the sportsbook so they can’t go too crazy with bonus promotions or they’ll be shutting the lights off.

Regarding game selection, they had plenty of options and definitely hit all the checkboxes for most popular games. The current selection includes:

  • 7 Blackjack Games
  • 17 Table Games (Including several with large jackpots attached)
  • 200 Slot Games (Including several with large jackpots attached)
  • 17 Video Poker Games
  • 15 Specialty Games (Including Bingo and Keno)

One thing we noticed that we were big fans of was that the site has a section dedicated to learning about the games and proper strategy. Obviously, they know that regardless of how well you play, they will still have an edge, so it looks like they want you to be able to stretch your entertainment dollar as far as possible.

Deposit Options

Credit Card

  • Accepted Cards: Visa, Mastercar and American Express
  • Minimum: $20
  • Maximum: $1000
  • Fee: 4.9%

  • Minimum: $20
  • Maximum: $5000
  • Fee: None

For the credit card option, we noticed that when going to make our first deposit, this was slashed out and thus waived. It looks as though on at least the first deposit this fee is completely waived. Update: We have confirmed that the fee is waived on your first deposit but not on subsequent deposits through this method.

The site looks to be heavily pushing the Bitcoin option with no fees and extra bonuses for depositing with Bitcoin. Check out the Bonus and Promotions section below for more details.

It’s also important to point out that these were the options presented when an account was made and accessed from the United States. As the site does not have a dedicated deposit page with information on all options, it’s unclear if more options exist for rest of the world bettors.

Withdrawal Options

Check by Courier

  • Minimum: $50
  • Maximum: $3000
  • Frequency: 1 per 7 days
  • Timeframe: 10-15 Bus. Days

  • Minimum: $20
  • Maximum: $9500
  • Frequency: 1 per 5 days
  • Timeframe: 1-15 minutes

As you can see, Bitcoin is definitely the way to go with withdrawals if you’re able to. That being said, up to $3k per week with under two weeks delivery time is actually really good for US players in today’s climate. We would assume that rest of the world players would receive their funds significantly quicker but can’t confirm this. Though they only have two options (we would like to see more), they are good options and clearly laid out with realistic time frames.

Bonuses and Promotions

Welcome Bonuses

According to our welcome email we received, we’re eligible for $3250 in welcome bonuses, 200% cash back with the refer-a-friend program, and a $10 bonus just for checking out the mobile casino. We dug a little further and got some more details on these bonuses.

$250 of the $3250 is a sports betting welcome bonus. The remaining $3000 is only for casino players as a welcome bonus. Bovada also offers a 50% match bonus up to $500 for sports betting clients who deposit with Bitcoin and 150% match bonus up to $1500 for casino players.

All in all, this looks to be a pretty good welcome bonus. Obviously, it’s a bit sweeter for casino players, but it’s still pretty good for sports bettors who are usually left off the welcome bonus train anyways. We have to take what we can get, and $500 and $250 are nothing to scoff at.

Refer a Friend Bonus

It was a little confusingly worded as to how this works, but we’ve done our best. For sports bettors, get “$40 off of your friend’s first deposit up to $100.” At first, we thought this maybe meant that you could only get $100 total, but it follows up to say that you can get unlimited bonuses, so that’s not the case. What we think it’s supposed to be is 40% up to $100, unlimited times. If you’re going to go nuts referring friends, we highly recommend contacting support first.

The site also had several casino based bonuses include blackjack weekends, mobile casino bonuses, table mania Tuesdays, and a frequent player type program that rewards cash for play. The site also has several casino match bonuses that can be used weekly and not just on the first deposit.

Customer Service

When you click the Help tab, it takes you to a page with a bunch of FAQ sections that are pretty in-depth with information. If you’re looking for help from an actual agent, you’ll need to click the chat bubble next to the question mark icon in the top right corner of your screen. This will take you to a contact form and also give you access to a phone number you can use to call support. Bovada also has email support, though, they don’t list that email address on this page. Overall, these three options are plenty when it comes to support and it’s really awesome to see the phone option. There’s nothing more frustrating than having a time sensitive issue and not being able to get help right away.
