Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy said that they would welcome facing each other at the Ryder Cup after a couple of high-profile pairings recently.
The odds at online sportsbooks suggest they could meet one-on-one in Sunday singles.
DeChambeau, McIlroy Both Have Success Against One Another
On the eve of the Ryder Cup, DeChambeau and McIlroy stated they wouldn’t mind playing against each other at Bethpage Black.
DeChambeau said:
"Would I love to go up against him? Yeah. It would be a lot of fun. Is it going to happen? It's not likely. I mean, maybe once. You never know."
McIlroy commented:
"If I come up against Bryson at some point, I think that's great. I think that's wonderful for the championship and wonderful for us, as well, in some ways."
The two have been going back and forth since McIlroy’s missed putts handed the 2024 U.S. Open to DeChambeau. The two were also paired together in the final round of the Masters, when McIlroy completed the career Grand Slam in a playoff win over Team Europe teammate Justin Rose.
DeChambeau said he wanted to “chirp in McIlroy’s ear” at the Ryder Cup, perhaps alluding to McIlroy not speaking to him during the Masters final round. McIlroy responded by saying:
"I think the only way he gets attention is by mentioning other people. That is basically what I think of that. To get attention, he will mention me or Scottie [Scheffler] or others."
The golf world would love nothing more than to see these stars go toe-to-toe. Will it be on Sunday?
What are the Odds of DeChambeau and McIlroy Meeting in Sunday Singles?
The Ryder Cup odds are suggesting that DeChambeau and McIlroy could meet in Sunday singles. McIlroy is favored at BetUS at +175 to be the first player out for Team Europe. DeChambeau is second in the odds for Team USA, coming in at +475.
The one man standing in the way of this potential blockbuster matchup? The aforementioned Scheffler, the American ace who is the #1 player in the world. Scheffler is favored at +130 to lead Team USA out on Sunday, and that’s probably the smarter matchup for American captain Keegan Bradley. Scheffler is a fiery competitor, but he is very level-headed. DeChambeau can get excitable, to say the least. But he can throw McIlroy off his game, and the New York crowd will be 100% on DeChambeau’s side.
But Bradley, who is also very animated, could lean towards DeChambeau as an option to face McIlroy. The home captain gets to choose whether to name his player first, or allow the visiting captain to go. If European counterpart Luke Donald picks McIlroy first, Bradley will have a massive decision on his hands on Sunday!
