The Olympic Village for the 2025 Games is out of condoms after three days, which is a record. There were 300,000 condoms available for athletes at the 2024 Paris Games, but reportedly less than 10,000 in Italy.
Athletes have been told that more are on the way in this Olympic tradition.
Key Points
- The Olympic village in Italy for the 2026 Games has run out of condoms.
- There were less than 10,000 condoms available after 300,000 were given out at the 2024 Paris Games.
- More will arrive soon, reportedly, according to Olympic organizers.
10,000 Condoms Were Used, In One Way or Another, in Three Days
It was reported on Friday morning that the Olympic Village had depleted its condom supply.
An athlete speaking anonymously told Italian media:
“The supplies ran out in just three days. They promised us more will arrive, but who knows when.”
The practice of the Olympic Village being supplied with free condoms has been going on since the 1998 Olympic Games in South Korea. Lombardy governor Attilio Fontana said:
“Yes, we provide free condoms to athletes in the Olympic village. If this seems strange to some, they’re unaware of the established Olympic practice. It began in Seoul in 1988 to raise awareness among athletes and young people about sexually transmitted disease prevention, a topic that shouldn’t cause embarrassment.”
The practice was halted for the 2020 Tokyo Games, which actually happened in July 2021, due to the global pandemic. There were reportedly 300,000 condoms available for 10,500 athletes at the 2024 Paris Games. But for Italy, there were less than 10,000 condoms for 3,000 athletes. Organizers have told the athletes that more are on the way, as there are still nine days left at the Milano Cortina Games.
Why Did the Condom Supply Get Used So Quickly?
There are a whole slew of answers for this question. But the most logical is that, these athletes have been training for the Olympics for four years, and probably most of their lives. They’re in a setting with some of the best athletes in the world, and they would like to blow off some steam when their event is over. More than likely, before their event is over, especially if your event isn’t until later in the Games. This could be one more factor to consider before you wager at Olympic betting sites.
There is also, reportedly, a gym, games, and free drinks such as Coca-Cola (which doesn’t seem very healthy) and smoothies. However, it seems sex is the way many athletes tend to unwind. But it is good that the Olympics supply their athletes with condoms to stop any spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
