Bookies Suggest Crawford-Canelo Rematch After Massive Crawford Victory

  • Terence Crawford jumped up two weight classes to upset Canelo Alvarez, becoming the fourth boxer to win the lineal title in four different divisions.
  • Crawford entered the fight as the underdog, but his movement gave the bigger Alvarez problems.
  • Online bookies are banking on a Crawford-Canelo rematch happening in the future.

The boxing world was treated to a spectacular show on Saturday in Las Vegas, when Terence Crawford overcame the odds to beat Canelo Alvarez in a masterclass performance. Crawford was the underdog, but managed to make history.

Online sportsbooks are suggesting that there will be a rematch between the two legends, although nothing has been set in stone.

Crawford Puts On Clinic Against the Bigger Alvarez

Much was made of Crawford’s jump in weight classes as he fought at 154 points in a disappointing win over Israil Madrimov in April 2024 to win the WBA and the vacant WBO interim light middleweight belts. However, the 37-year-old made his name fighting at 147 pounds, which is welterweight.

Meanwhile, Alvarez was the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight champion, and had fought at 168 pounds in 10 of his last 11 fights. He moved up to light heavyweight in May 2022, but failed to beat Dmitry Bivol for his title.

But Crawford showed tremendous footwork and movement to stay out of Alvarez’s crosshairs. He also didn’t seem to lose any hand speed in moving up in weight, beating Alvarez to the punch many times. The official score was Crawford by unanimous decision with scores of 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113. However, it didn’t seem like it was that close.

Crawford joins Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao as the only boxers to win lineal titles in four weight classes (lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight, and super middleweight). However, Mayweather and Pacquiao stopped at 154 pounds, while Crawford made an even bigger jump to 168 pounds.

Will There Be a Rematch, and Who Will Be the Favorite?

BetOnline is one of many online bookies who believe there will be a rematch between the two. This boxing betting site favors a rematch at -150, with no rematch priced at +110. However, it’s not solely in the hands of the boxers. Alvarez is promoted by Turki Al-Sheikh, who might be the most powerful man in boxing right now.

There are no numbers yet on how many people streamed the fight on Netflix, but it seemed to be the biggest story in sports on a weekend where college football and the NFL were also in play. The fight also broke the record for attendance at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, as 70,482 people were reportedly there. It was also reported that Alvarez got $100 million for the fight, while Crawford received $10 million. Crawford said he’d do a rematch for the right price, and he’s in line for a deserved raise.

Crawford would probably be a slight favorite heading into the rematch, which would be the biggest fight of the year if it happens in 2026. In a time when exhibitions like Floyd Mayweather-Mike Tyson and any Jake Paul fight are ruling, boxing fans were clamoring for a true fight, and it lived up to the hype. It would do well for boxing fans if there was a rematch, and it would be good for the fighters’ pockets!
