- At 21 years old, Coco Gauff has reached #2 in the WTA rankings.
- The American beat Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets on Monday to become the second-youngest player ever to reach five quarterfinals in a single event, trailing Venus Williams by two days.
- Gauff is one of four Americans on both the men’s and women’s sides to reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros this year.
Coco Gauff is one of the faces of tennis at a young age. The American just turned 21 in March, but she already has a Grand Slam, the 2023 U.S. Open.
Gauff made history on Monday with her latest win at the French Open, becoming the second-youngest player to reach the quarterfinals five times in a single Grand Slam event. She is one of four American players still competing on the clay courts of Roland Garros.
Gauff Reaches Fifth Straight French Open Quarterfinal
On Monday morning, Gauff defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets with scores of 6-0, 7-5.
Gauff made history as she became the second-youngest player to make it to the quarterfinals five times at a Grand Slam event. At 21 years and 73 days, Gauff is only behind Venus Williams, who did at 21 years, 71 days.
Williams did at the U.S. Open, making the final in 1997, where she lost to Martina Hingis. She then made it to the semifinals in 1998 and 1999, before Williams went back-to-back at Flushing Meadows, beating Lindsay Davenport in 2000, and her sister, Serena, in 2001.
Gauff reached the quarterfinals of the French Open in 2021, then lost to Iga Świątek in the 2022 final. She lost in the quarterfinals in 2023, and Gauff bowed out in the semifinals last year. The 21-year-old also won the doubles title at Roland Garros with Kateřina Siniaková in 2024.
Gauff, Madison Keys, Tommy Paul, Frances Tiafoe Flying American Flag at Roland Garros
Women’s French Open odds will have Gauff near the top of the board, likely behind Swiatek, who has won here four times, and Aryna Sabalenka, the #1 player in the world. She is one of four Americans to reach the quarterfinals.
Gauff will meet fellow American Madison Keys in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, meaning there will be a player from the United States in the semifinals. On the men’s side, Frances Tiafoe will take on Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals. Tommy Paul will try to eliminate Carlos Alcaraz, the defending French Open champion. Alcaraz defeated American Ben Shelton in the fourth round.
No American woman has won the French Open since Serena Williams did it for the third time in 2015. It has been a longer wait for the men as Andre Agassi was the last American to do it, back in 1999. There are some excellent players left in both draws. But the American contingent is strong at Roland Garros, and more history could be made!
