Malik Beasley, an NBA free agent, was found to be innocent of any wrongdoing in a gambling investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.
But the NBA would like to conduct their own investigation, which is ongoing, but looks to be ending soon.
Feds Launched Investigation of Beasley Ahead of Contract Signing with Pistons
Back in June, it was reported that the U.S. Attorney’s Office was looking into Beasley, then playing for the Detroit Pistons, in regards to potential gambling allegations. This is the same investigation in which former NBA player Jontay Porter was found guilty, banned from the NBA for life, and is still awaiting sentencing.
The federal office has seemingly cleared Beasley of any wrongdoing. However, the NBA announced that they were doing their own investigation of Beasley. The report stats that the investigation is “in its final stages”. The investigation stemmed from a game in January 2024, when a prop concerning Beasley saw a huge price move towards the Under. The total was Under 2.5 rebounds, which had a price of +120, but it moved to -250. Beasley had six rebounds in the game.
The federal investigation came just as Beasley was about to re-sign with the Detroit Pistons for $42 million over three years. Beasley had a terrific season for the upstart Pistons, who went to the playoffs for the first time since 2019. The 28-year-old guard averaged 16.3 points and hit 41.6% of his three-point attempts.
What Could Happen to Beasley?
You won’t find any Beasley odds at NBA betting sites right now, but the NBA could levy a slight fine, even if there is no wrongdoing. The league is all about optics, and the concept that Beasley could have been aligned with something bad might be enough to earn him a fine. They would have to find something substantial in order to suspend him, however. That’s when the NBA Players Association would get involved.
For now, it looks like Beasley is working on finding his next team. If you believe social media, former Pistons’ teammates Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duran are in Rome, Italy, with Beasley, probably trying to convince him to return to Detroit. Given Beasley’s prolific long-range shooting, he’ll have suitors.
It’ll be interesting to see if Beasley puts any bad feelings to the side with the Pistons, who pulled his contract offer when the federal investigation began. But if the feds didn’t find anything, the NBA likely won’t find enough to punish Beasley for much, if anything at all.
