- Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks had $400,000 in items stolen from his house in Phoenix during All-Star weekend.
- This is not new, as many athletes have been robbed recently, including Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Luka Doncic, and Tyler Seguin.
- Marte’s $400,000 loss isn’t the largest that is reported, as that benchmark belongs to Bobby Portis and Jose Altuve, who broke the million-dollar mark.
Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks is the latest high-profile athlete to be a victim of a robbery. The second baseman’s home in Phoenix was burgled over All-Star weekend, and he claims to have lost over $400,000 in items.
The highest amounts that are reported belongs to Houston Astros’ star Jose Altuve and Bobby Portis of the Milwaukee Bucks, who both lost over $1 million in jewelry.
Marte Joins List of Athletes That Have Been Robbed Recently
Marte’s house in Phoenix was robbed on July 15, which was the day of the MLB All-Star Game.
The Arizona second baseman represented the Diamondbacks in the All-Star Game and went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs in a home-run swing-off win for the National League. Marte, who is a longshot in the MLB MVP odds for the National League, was then placed on the restricted list to deal with the situation. There was no one home at the time.
Marte then revealed on July 22 that he lost about $400,000 in items.
He is just the latest in a long list of high-profile athletes to have been robbed over the last few years. These athletes are targeted by an organization that knows when they’re away, and it isn’t just one sport that is hit hard.
Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Travis Kelce of the NFL, Tyler Seguin of the NHL, Bobby Portis, and Karl-Anthony Towns of the NBA are among the athletes who have fallen victim. Even WWE stars Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch have been robbed.
Burrow had $300,000 stolen, while Mahomes and Kelce were targeted by a South American group and lost $2 million in items. But two players have lost more and were hit harder than others.
Portis and Altuve’s Losses Are the Highest Reported Amounts
Portis, who plays for the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, lost almost $1.5 million to burglars on November 2, 2024, and this was a part of the ring that targeted Kelce, Mahomes, and Burrow. Meanwhile, Altuve’s Houston-area home was robbed on March 30, 2023, which was Opening Day for the Astros. The 2017 American League MVP lost over $1 million in jewelry, specifically watches.
This won’t be the last time that we hear of athletes getting targeted. These groups are highly organized, not just some smash-and-grab teams. They stake out homes and know when players are away to minimize the chances of seeing anyone while they’re robbing the place.
Hopefully, everyone remains safe and the burglars are eventually caught.
