Phillie Phanatic Favored to Defeat Blooper in Philadelphia for MLB Fight Night

  • Odds have emerged for a proposed boxing match between the Philadelphia Phillies’ mascot, the Phillie Phanatic, and his Atlanta counterpart, Blooper.
  • The internet is on fire trying to figure out if this is actually real, as there is a rivalry between the two National League East teams, and the mascots as well.
  • The Phillie Phanatic is a considerable favorite over Blooper in this proposed boxing match.

Major League Baseball has been trying new methods to get fans into the ballpark, including the pitch clock, and it seems to be working. Many teams are reporting that they’ve seen an increase in attendance through the first two months of the season.

Philadelphia is taking it to the next level, as odds have been released for a proposed boxing match between the Phillies’ mascot, the Phillie Phanatic, and Atlanta’s Blooper. We will determine if this is indeed real, and break down this prospective match.

Is This Boxing Match Between MLB Mascots Real?

The Liberty Line reported this story earlier this month.

The X account in question does have “PARODY” in its bio, but you can find odds at various sportsbooks for a potential boxing match. It would take place on Tuesday, May 27, at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The Braves would be in the “City of Brotherly Love” to kick off a three-game set against the Phillies, who lead the National League East as of May 21. The Braves are six games back of the Phillies, who lost two of three in Atlanta from April 8-10.

The account did tag ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan in the post, but there is no mention of the event on his official X account. But it wouldn’t be a big shock as MLB is trying to ride the wave of increased attendance. At the beginning of May, MLB was averaging over 27,000 fans per game, which would be the highest number through April since 2017. Heading into the dog days of summer, MLB would love to keep that momentum going, and novelty events like this could bring people to the stadium.

1080 The Fan, a sports radio station in Portland Oregon, also wondered if it was real, how the match would go, and discussed the fighting ability of other mascots across all sports.

To answer the initial question, it doesn’t seem like we’ll know if it’s real until May 27.

How Would a Boxing Match Between the Phillie Phanatic and Blooper Go?

BetUS, one of the best MLB betting sites, has odds for a potential match between the two mascots.

Phillie Phanatic-300
Blooper+200

This wouldn’t be the first “fight” for the Phillie Phanatic, who went at it with legendary Dodgers’ manager Tommy Lasorda in 1988.

Blooper also has had issues with the Philadelphia fans, who got into an online beef with the Atlanta mascot in October 2023. The two teams were meeting in the National League Divisional Series, which the Phillies won in four games.

We haven’t seen Blooper fight, but there is video of him stiff-arming children on the football field.

I’m going to have to lean towards the Phillie Phanatic, one of the most iconic mascots in MLB history. He’ll also have the home crowd behind him, although at -300, there isn’t much of a return to be had. But honestly, I just want to see this happen, regardless of who wins!
