In an unprecedented decision, the Colorado Supreme Court has ruled that Donald Trump will not be on the 2024 Presidential Election ballot in the state. According to the latest 2024 Presidential Election odds at BetOnline, Trump’s odds have moved from +115 to +130.
Despite not experiencing a wild swing, the updated presidential race odds indicate that bettors do not see the news as a positive for Trump. Nevertheless, some political pundits have speculated that the ruling could have the opposite effect, helping Trump garner more support rather than harming his campaign.
Trump’s criminal court cases haven’t put a serious dent in his 2024 Presidential Election odds. In fact, his odds were on the move before this recent small reversal. In January 2023, Trump had +425 odds to win the 2024 Presidential Election.
On October 12, 2023, Trump’s odds dipped to +150 and were continuing to get closer to even money before the slight reversal this week from +115 to +130. The shift to +130 odds pins Trump’s implied probability of winning the 2024 Presidential Election at 43.5 percent.
First State To Rule Against Trump
States have tried in the past to remove Trump from the ballot, but none were successful until now. Most recently, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled that Trump can remain on the ballot for the 2024 Presidential Election.
In a 3-0 vote, on December 14, the court upheld two decisions from the lower courts. The appeal was launched by the watchdog group Free Speech For People.
“As the Court of Claims recognized, it would be important to decide whether to grant a declaration that Trump is disqualified from holding the office of President of the United States at this time,” stated the courts.
The Colorado Supreme Court did not view it in the same light. Trump was removed from Colorado’s presidential primary ballot following a 4-3 vote. The ruling referenced Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which includes an insurrection clause that can disqualify people from positions of power if they have taken an oath to uphold the Constitution.
Colorado’s district courts found that Trump acted in an insurrection, but that the 14th Amendment didn’t apply to the presidency. The Colorado Supreme Court disagreed and overturned the district court’s ruling and insisted that it does apply to the presidency.
The court will stay its ruling until January 4, before the decision is possibly reviewed by a higher court. Shortly after the decision, Trump’s team announced that they would appeal the decision made by the Colorado Supreme Court.
Trump campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, claimed that it was an erroneous decision to remove him from Colorado’s presidential primary.
“The Colorado Supreme Court issued a completely flawed decision tonight, and we will swiftly file an appeal to the United States Supreme Court and a concurrent request for a stay of this deeply undemocratic decision”, said Cheung. “We have full confidence that the U.S. Supreme Court will quickly rule in our favor and finally put an end to these un-American lawsuits.”
Trump Remains Overwhelming GOP Front-Runner
Before the ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court, Trump had -1000 odds to win the Republican nomination. Currently, Trump is -725 to represent the GOP in the 2024 Presidential Election.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who owned the second-shortest odds behind Trump for months, is now well behind Nikki Haley at BetOnline. DeSantis is +1400 while Haley is +425 to win the GOP nomination.
With an implied probability of 19 percent to win the GOP nomination, Haley is emerging as a legitimate threat to Trump. However, a recent Quinnipiac University poll indicates that Trump maintains a comfortable lead over the rest of the field.
Furthermore, the poll revealed that Trump and Biden remain in a virtual tie for the 2024 Presidential Election. Despite Trump’s odds regressing slightly due to the recent court ruling in Colorado, his +130 odds are firmly ahead of Biden’s +200 odds to win the election.
