- The Indiana Fever have been battered by injuries this season, and now Sophie Cunningham is out for the rest of the year with a knee injury.
- The Fever have been without Caitlin Clark for most of the season, while Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald are also out.
- The Fever were one of the WNBA title favorites, but have fallen down the pecking order.
The Indiana Fever have lost another player as Sophie Cunningham is out for the season with a knee injury. Cunningham joins Caitlin Clark and others on the injured list.
The Fever had high hopes for this season and started out as championship contenders. However, they’ve dropped down the list in the WNBA title odds.
Cunningham Out for Season, Fever “Hope” Clark Can Return
The Fever revealed on Tuesday that Cunningham would be out for the season with a torn MCL.
Cunningham is in her seventh WNBA season, and her first in Indiana after spending the first six in Phoenix. She has played 30 games in 2025, averaging 8.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, while shooting 43.6% from the field. But she earned attention on June 17 as Cunningham stuck up for Clark, who had been getting into it with Connecticut’s Jacy Sheldon all game. Cunningham gave Sheldon a hard foul, which started a confrontation with three ejections. A GoFundMe was started to pay Cunningham’s fines for her, as Indiana fans appreciated her protecting Clark, the Fever star guard.
Now, she joins Clark on the injured list, as Clark has been out since July 15 with a groin injury. Fellow guards Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald are also out for the season with knee and foot injuries, respectively.
It will be tough for the Fever to improve, as Indiana head coach Stephanie White said, “That’s the hope,” when asked if Clark would be back by the end of the regular season. That doesn’t sound encouraging for the Fever.
Can the Fever Move Back Up the WNBA Championship Odds?
Thanks mostly to Clark, the Fever opened the season behind only defending champion New York in the WNBA Championship odds. But due to their injuries (again, mostly to Clark), the Fever are sixth on the list now, and you can find them at BetUS at +1600.
Even if Clark returns, there will be some rust, and she’ll have to get back up to speed after playing just 13 games. The Fever have shown that they can be a good team without their star guard. Kelsey Mitchell, Aliyah Boston, and Natasha Howard have all had solid seasons. But without Clark, the Fever aren’t a championship team. The loss of Cunningham, along with McDonald and Colson, hurts their depth and toughness.
This could be a lost season for the Fever, but we’ll see how they fare coming down the homestretch! But if you think they can still win, the Fever offers a fantastic return!
