Will “Happy Gilmore 2” Be Rated Fresh at Rotten Tomatoes?

  • The sequel to Adam Sandler’s 1996 hit, “Happy Gilmore”, has found a home at Netflix, where Sandler’s movies have been wildly successful recently.
  • There is currently no release date for “Happy Gilmore 2”, but Bovada has odds for a “Fresh” rating of 85% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes after a month of being on Netflix.
  • Sandler will likely be joined by Christopher MacDonald, who will reprise his role as Shooter McGavin.

Adam Sandler’s “Happy Gilmore” is considered a classic Sandler movie. The 1996 film cost $12 million to make, but made $39 million at the box office. Its legacy continues to endure in 2024.

It’s no surprise that Sandler has signed up to co-write and star in “Happy Gilmore 2”. Once again, he’ll play Gilmore, a failed hockey player with a wicked slap shot. He uses his it to enter the golf world, and with the help of Chubbs Peterson, Gilmore becomes a golf sensation.

Gilmore’s fight with “The Price Is Right” host Bob Barker is the stuff of legends, as is Gilmore’s yelling at the golf ball to “Go to your home!!!!”, which can be still heard at courses when a putt won’t drop.

Trusted online sportsbook Bovada has odds on whether “Happy Gilmore” will receive a “Fresh” rating of 85% or higher at Rotten Tomatoes. Will it reach that benchmark?

The Odds Are Close For A Fresh Rating of “Happy Gilmore 2”

At the time of writing, Bovada has odds of -140 at entertainment betting sites for “Happy Gilmore 2” to be rated 85% or lower a month after it is released on Netflix. 85% or over gets EVEN odds.

The original “Happy Gilmore” has a Fresh rating of 62%, which ranks 10th on a list of Sandler movies on Rotten Tomatoes. However, what makes these odds interesting is that the top three movies on the Sandler list have all come from his relationship with Netflix. “Hustle” has a Fresh rating of 93%, “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)” is rated 92%, and “You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah” has a 91% rating.

It will definitely get plenty of eyes on Netflix. It is reported by Screen Rant that Sandler’s “Murder Mystery 2”, with Jennifer Aniston, was one of the streamer’s biggest hits from December 2023 to May 2024.

Who Will Be In “Happy Gilmore 2”?

There aren’t many details for “Happy Gilmore 2”. Christopher MacDonald, who played Gilmore’s rival, Shooter McGavin, broke the news that a sequel script had been written in March. MacDonald got this from Sandler himself, so the odds are high that we’ll see Shooter McGavin in the sequel.

Julie Bowen played Gilmore’s love interest, Virginia Venit, but there is no word on her involvement yet. We could see the “Modern Family” actress, however, since she starred with Sandler in the 2020 movie “Hubie Halloween”, another Netflix project.

However, we won’t get another chance to see Barker, along with Carl Weathers, who played Chubbs, and Frances Bay, who played Gilmore’s grandmother. All three have passed away, although you could see something that honors their memories in the movie.

We could also see some professional golfers in “Happy Gilmore 2”, given the cult-classic status of the original. A slew of TaylorMade’s roster, including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, took a try at the famous Happy Gilmore swing for the 25th anniversary of the film.

It’s a toss-up whether it’ll reach the Fresh rating of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, but one thing is for sure: Netflix will have another Sandler hit on their hands with “Happy Gilmore 2”.
