The Carolina Hurricanes haven’t been to the Stanley Cup Final since winning it all in 2006. Rod Brind’Amour was the captain of the team that saw the Hurricanes defeat the Edmonton Oilers in seven games. Now, Brind’Amour can get the Hurricanes back to the finals as a coach with four wins over the Panthers.
The path to the conference finals for the Hurricanes has been the least stressful among the remaining teams. They defeated an injury-riddled Devils squad in five games to open the playoffs, and then delivered an impressive victory over Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals in five games.
They’ve only lost two games in the postseason and have been waiting around, resting and tending to their banged-up bodies. The Hurricanes haven’t played since Tuesday, May 15. Meanwhile, the Panthers just played on Sunday night in a Game 7 versus the Maple Leafs.
Additionally, unlike the Panthers, the Hurricanes weren’t playing hockey in June last season. In what I anticipate being a defensive-based, physical series, the extra time off should be beneficial.
The Hurricanes rank first in the playoffs in the NHL, with 1.8 goals against per game. That’s impressive considering they had a series against a dangerous Capitals’ offense!

Goaltender Frederik Andersen has been on fire in the crease for the Hurricanes. Andersen has a 1.36 GAA and 0.937 save percentage through nine games. In a series that could come down to goaltending, Andersen is a big asset to have on Carolina’s side.
You also can’t discount the Hurricanes’ offense because it’s an underrated unit. Led by Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis, the Hurricanes averaged 3.24 goals per game through their first 10 playoff games. Well-rounded and built to deal with a physical team like the Panthers, they don’t look like much of an underdog to me!

The Panthers finished third in the Atlantic Division with a regular season record of 47-31-4. They sputtered down the stretch with a record of 3-6-1 in their final ten games. However, this was largely due to injuries, and the Panthers were able to get healthy at the perfect time for Game 1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Additionally, defenseman Aaron Ekblad returned from his 60-game suspension for the Panthers. The time off for Matthew Tkachuk just before the playoffs may have actually worked out in the Panthers’ favor!

Still, the Panthers are coming off a hard-nosed series versus the Leafs, so you have to give the Hurricanes the advantage when talking about healthier bodies. Again, this is going to be a physical series, and the Panthers are amongst the best teams for these matchups, but the Hurricanes can match that energy.
The Panthers were seventh in the regular season, allowing an average of 2.72 goals per game. They fended off two feverish offensive squads in the Lightning and Leafs to yield 2.42 goals per game, putting them second in the league behind the Hurricanes. Additionally, the Panthers rank in the top 5 offensively, with 3.75 goals scored per contest.
The Panthers are a veteran-laden team that won’t be overwhelmed by the moment in the Eastern Conference Final. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky has been here before and can go toe-to-toe with Andersen. Bobrovsky has a solid 2.31 GAA and .901 save percentage through 12 postseason games between the pipes.
