At his peak, “Money” Mayweather was known as arguably the greatest defensive boxer of all time. He is a fantastic counterpuncher, luring his opponent in so he could stick with his jab, sometimes doubling and tripling up on the punch. Mayweather is also very accurate, and he doesn’t waste many punches. His vaunted “shoulder roll” allowed Mayweather to get inside on his opponent, but they would just end up hitting his shoulders and not his head or body.
Mayweather is actually bigger than Pacquiao and will enjoy a five-inch reach difference, but that won’t stop “Pac-Man” from going at him. He remains an aggressive southpaw fighter, which he showed in a controversial draw against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in July 2025. However, his pace was no match for Mayweather’s defensive abilities in May 2015. Can Pacquiao get his revenge in September?
It should be noted that there hasn’t been a weight class announced yet for this match. However, the first match was fought at 147 pounds. The highest weight class both men have fought at is 154 pounds. It’ll likely be either one of those two weight classes.
Floyd Mayweather (-175)
Mayweather (50-0, 27 KO) hasn’t fought professionally since knocking out Conor McGregor in August 2017, which is the second-highest grossing boxing match in history behind his first match with Pacquiao. He has fought in eight exhibition matches, including one against Logan Paul, but nothing that truly tested Mayweather’s abilities. He’ll reportedly also face 59-year-old Mike Tyson at some point this spring.
The 49-year-old appears to be still in very good shape, but it’s tough to know how he’ll look against an actual boxer. He has fought YouTubers, old sparring partners, MMA fighters, and John Gotti III on two occasions, one of which was called because the two camps fought in the ring. Then, there is Tyson, who is a shell of himself.
Mayweather was an incredible boxer at his peak, but it’s fair to have concerns since we haven’t seen him fight an actual boxer since beating Andre Berto in September 2015. How much of his speed has been retained? Can he ramp it up against Pacquiao? The Mayweather vs. Pacquiao odds seem to think so, but I have plenty of questions about the 49-year-old former five-weight champion.
Manny Pacquiao (+135)
Pacquiao (62-8-3, 39 KO) looked slow in a loss against WBA super-welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas in August 2021, prompting his retirement. But he shocked the boxing world against Barrios in his 2025 match that went to a majority draw, and many thought Pacquiao actually won the match.
“Pac-Man” has also fought in exhibition matches, three to be exact. You can’t take much away from those, as one was against an older Jesus Salud back in 2002. The others were against kickboxers and martial artists. He’ll also take on former Russian boxer Ruslan Provodnikov in April. However, I’ve seen Pacquiao fight professionally since his first match with Mayweather.
Pacquiao, who is an eight-weight champion, is also two years younger than Mayweather, but he has fought more and has definitely taken more punishment. His aggressive style of fighting used to throw caution to the wind, and he still has power. But I’m intrigued by how Pacquiao enters this fight. Will he go after Mayweather as he did in the first fight?
Motivation and Intangibles
At this stage in their legendary careers, why would either of these boxers take this fight? Here are my thoughts on their motivations heading into the Sphere in Las Vegas.
Mayweather – Is It Money, or to Remain Undefeated
His nickname is “Money”, so it stands to reason that Mayweather is here for a financial windfall. He touts his standing as the biggest revenue generator boxing has ever seen at every turn. There is no word on how much Mayweather is getting from Netflix, but I can guarantee you it isn’t cheap.
But Mayweather also loves the “0” in his loss column, and he’ll want to keep that. You could argue that he wouldn’t be as rich without it. He won’t underestimate Pacquiao, who he knows is still dangerous. Both things can be true.
Pacquiao – A Paycheck, or Revenge?
The same goes for Pacquiao, who will also be receiving a large sum of money from Netflix for this bout. It’s tough to turn down what he is likely being offered, especially when you see the numbers from the Jake Paul-Anthony Joshua fight, where both men made $92 million, reportedly.
But Pacquiao would surely want to avenge the 2015 loss to Mayweather. He claimed to have a shoulder injury going into that match, which Mayweather brushed off as an excuse. Pacquiao is also very prideful, and he knows that a win could set up a lucrative trilogy fight.
Mayweather vs. Pacquiao 2 Predictions and Betting Pick
Pacquiao is a dangerous underdog, given that he’s been more active professionally, and he rolled back the clock with a great performance against Barrios. He was more controlled, yet still aggressive, and it’ll be interesting to see what this version of “Pac-Man” can bring against Mayweather.
I do think Mayweather is still in good enough shape to avoid the big knockout shot, as he has been his entire career. I believe he’ll take this fight seriously, and while I do still have questions about his boxing activity, I’m going with “Money” in my Mayweather vs. Pacquiao 2 betting predictions. There’s some value in his price (which can be found as high as -225 at some sportsbooks). I think this fight goes much like the first match, in which Mayweather uses his defense and counterpunching to score a decision win.
