Jake Paul Analysis

Despite facing criticism from some people who believe Paul should give up on a boxing career, the 27-year-old continues to try to gain respect in the boxing community.

After defeating Ryan Bourland with a TKO in the first round, Paul once again called out Canelo Alvarez. Instead of getting the current world champion or a ranked cruiserweight, he will get a matchup against the 58-year-old version of “Iron Mike”.

Fighter Record and Recent Form

  • March 2, 2023 – WIN vs. Ryan Bourland (TKO)
  • Dec. 15, 2023 – WIN vs. Andre August (KO)
  • Aug. 5, 2023 – WIN vs. Nate Diaz (UD)
  • Feb. 26, 2023 – LOSS vs. Tommy Fury (SD)
  • Oct. 29, 2022 – WIN vs. Anderson Silva (UD)

Overall, Paul has been part of ten sanctioned fights. With only one loss on his resume, Paul boasts a record of 9-1-0 entering the Tyson fight.

The YouTuber’s lone loss was against professional boxer Tommy Fury on Feb. 26, 2023, via a split decision. It was a competitive loss for Paul, though he was a favorite against Fury.

Following a textbook win by unanimous decision over MMA fighter Nate Diaz, Fury turned his attention to regional boxers. Paul easily disposed of Andre August and Ryan Bourland with a KO and TKO1.

Fighting Style

Paul is an aggressive fighter who works off his jab and then looks to land a right. The “Problem Child” primarily likes to utilize body jabs to set up a few combinations in succession.

It’s a straightforward strategy that works against fighters who gas easily. There isn’t anything unique about Paul’s approach, but for the caliber of opponents he’s faced, it has generally been successful.

In the context of professional boxing, Paul has mediocre power with his right hand. He doesn’t have Deontay Wilder’s power, but compared to fighters at his level, or other amateurs, Paul can throw a right.

Physical Condition

For a fight against a 58-year-old Tyson, conditioning will be important. If Paul shows up to the fight in July in decent enough shape, he can wear Tyson down with his cardio. At the least, Paul can run around the ring and avoid a KO in the center of the ring.

The 6-foot-1 Paul has shown up to fights not in the best shape in the past. He and Fury clinched and hugged for nearly five minutes during their bout last February.

Nevertheless, for a “bucket list” fight against a name like Tyson, expect Paul to put some work into preparing for this one. Paul is likely to show up in acceptable shape to fight Tyson.

The influencer won’t need to be in peak physical condition to win the cardio battle, but can gain a sizable advantage if he takes his training seriously.

Mike Tyson Analysis

In the 1980s, Tyson was known as the “Baddest Man on the Planet”. With wins against Tony Tucker, Michael Spinks, and Larry Holmes, Tyson was the most feared heavyweight in boxing.

However, it has been a long time since Tyson has fought competitively. “Iron” Mike officially retired from boxing in 2005. Since then, he has participated in a handful of exhibitions and charity fights, most recently versus Roy Jones Jr. in 2020.

Fighter Record and Recent Form

  • June 11, 2005 – LOSS vs. Kevin McBride (RTD)
  • July 30, 2004 – LOSS vs. Danny Williams (KO)
  • Feb. 22, 2003 – WIN vs. Clifford Etienne (KO)
  • June 8, 2002 – LOSS vs. Lennox Lewis (KO)
  • Oct. 13, 2001 – WIN vs. Brian Nielson (RTD)

I am using “recent” form rather loosely when it comes to Tyson. When Tyson steps into the ring against Paul, he’ll be 58 years old. He hasn’t had an official fight since 2005 and we anticipate that this will count as an exhibition fight in July.

After poor performances against Danny Williams and Kevin McBride, Tyson ended up calling it a career. The loss to McBride was particularly disheartening, as Tyson was well out of his prime and probably should have stepped down after knocking out Clifford Etienne in 2023.

Tyson retired with an official record of 50-6-0, with 44 KOs2. However, Tyson’s latest exhibition fight was versus Jones Jr. in 2020. The fight ultimately ended in a draw, which amounted to a glorified sparring contest between boxing legends.

Fighting Style

Tyson is well known for his punching power. If you ask any casual boxing fan, they will likely talk about his cement fists.

He certainly has power, but Tyson’s “peek-a-boo” boxing style is what he revolutionized in the 1980s. While the style isn’t as common among modern boxers today, the shorter Tyson was strategic in how he approached his knockout attempts.

The icon’s defense was just as important as his aggressive offense. At 5-foot-10, Tyson had to rely on the “peek-a-boo” strategy to maintain his range and then get closer against taller opponents.

Physical Condition

As a 57-year-old who will be 58 by the time this fight happens, Tyson is in incredible shape. In 2020, the veteran moved around the ring well against Jones Jr. for a guy nearing his 60s.

Also, Tyson occasionally shares footage of him training in the gym. While most 57-year-olds would be winded running a mile, he appears to be in impeccable physical shape.

That being said, he is not in professional boxing shape. He didn’t have the cardio to compete with professional boxers in 2005, so his current version can’t be better than that.

Sure, Paul isn’t a “real” professional boxer, but he is a 27-year-old with four fights on his resume in 2023. Nevertheless, I will end this by giving Tyson a ton of credit for being in the shape he is in at his age.

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson Prediction and Betting Pick

Depending on whether the rules stipulate a ten or six-round fight, the Paul vs. Tyson betting odds will be different at sports betting sites.

Due to the difference in their age and physical shape, Tyson will benefit if the fight is only six rounds. Therefore, Paul has -275 odds to beat Tyson through six rounds, while he is -450 in a ten-round bout.

Regardless, I don’t believe Tyson will go full-out against Paul. It doesn’t matter if it’s six or ten rounds. While people want to see Tyson knock Paul’s head off, there is no hatred between these two. Iron Mike won’t be seeking to make Paul look bad.

Even if Tyson makes some attempt to fight, he should run out of gas from running after Paul. He has power left in his punch, but we are still talking about a 58-year-old retired boxer. Tyson was in decent boxing shape against Jones Jr., but I remind you that it was four years ago.

This fight is a “lose-lose” situation for Paul, though. Either he embarrasses him with a loss against a 58-year-old or wins and everyone hates him further for beating up on an aging boxing legend. If Paul wants to receive respect, he can fight the winner of the Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou bout.

In any event, the event likely turns into a glorified sparring contest, with Tyson gassed after the first two rounds. The biggest winners in this bout will be the money that Tyson and Paul make from Netflix.

Consider backing Paul for your Paul vs. Tyson betting pick. However, wait for the fight odds to come down from -450. Public money will continue to flow in on Tyson to afford Paul stronger sports betting value.
