George Kambosos Jr.+525Under 10.5 (+240)

Vasiliy Lomachenko is a heavy -850 favorite to beat George Kambosos Jr. on his home turf. At this price, the 36-year-old Ukrainian has an implied probability to win of 89.5%, so the oddsmakers are almost certain he will come out on top.

Additionally, most online bookies believe this will be a long fight with the Over 10.5 at -330 odds. That equals a 76.6% chance that the fight won’t be decided until after 10 ½ rounds.

Tale of the Tape & Fighting Styles

The fighting stances of Lomacheno and Kambosos Jr. are also important to note. The Australian utilizes more of a traditional orthodox boxing style, while his opponent is a southpaw fighter. Let’s learn why this is important and how it will impact the fight.

George Kambosos Jr. (+525)

Why are the fighting stances important for this fight? Kambosos Jr. isn’t at his best against southpaws. In the same respect, he doesn’t look comfortable defending in these fights.

Kambosos Jr. has the height and reach advantage over Lomachenko. However, he still has to find a way to avoid the straight left hands of the savvy Ukrainian fighter.

If the challenger can manage to hold Lomachenko at bay with his reach, there might be an opening for him to score a big upset. The odds for Lomachenko vs. Kambosos Jr. suggest it will be difficult, however!

The Australian is an intelligent fighter who uses decent strength to beat opponents. He’s efficient at dictating the pace of fights, but that could come into question versus a superior technician like Lomachenko.

Also, to Kambosos Jr.’s credit, he is tough as nails. His toughness is why the Over 10.5 is juiced to -330 odds.

Vasiliy Lomachenko (-850)

Vasiliy Lomachenko’s movement can be difficult for most boxers to get a handle on. The veteran is constantly moving from the southpaw stance, further complicating issues for Kambosos Jr.

In addition to his superior movement, Lomachenko’s footwork is exquisite and tough to match considering his speed. On top of Lomachenko’s speed and footwork, he is an accurate lefty who doesn’t waste many attempts.

The Olympic gold medalist also possesses tremendous cardio and versatility. Waiting to exploit Lomachenko when he’s gassed in later rounds is not an effective strategy to beat him.

It will be important for Kambosos Jr. to tag him early because Lomachenko is unlikely to wear down as the fight progresses. In fact, there is a chance that the Ukrainian only gets stronger in the later rounds!

Recent Performances & Fighter Form

Kambosos Jr. is on the heels of a controversial win over Maxi Hughes. On July 22, 2023, he edged out Hughes for a majority decision victory, but it wasn’t a stellar performance.

Hughes could have just as easily been named the winner of that bout. He wasn’t part of my card for that fight, but I sympathize with bettors who had Hughes to win.

Kambosos Jr. is fortunate he isn’t on a three-fight losing skid entering this fight. Prior to the win over Hughes, the Australian dropped back-to-back fights against Devin Haney.

Haney, who recently was destroyed by Ryan Garcia, defeated Kambosos Jr. by unanimous decision in both fights. The Australian boxer’s latest clear win was over Teofimo Lopez in 20211.

Kambosos Jr.’s Last Five Fights:

  • WIN vs. Maxi Hughes via majority decision (July 22, 2023)
  • LOSS vs. Devin Haney via unanimous decision (October 16, 2022)
  • LOSS vs. Devin Haney via unanimous decision (June 5, 2022)
  • WIN vs. Teofimo Lopez via split decision (Nov. 27, 2021)
  • WIN vs. Lee Selby via split decision (Oct. 21, 2020)

While Kambosos Jr. was on the receiving end of a controversial decision that went his way, Lomachenko received the short end of the stick in his last fight. The Ukrainian is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Haney in Las Vegas on May 20, 2023.

Many boxing pundits and fans had that fight going to Lomachenko. The way I saw it, at a minimum, it was a draw and not a 116-112 win for Haney, as one judge had it. Anyone with an unbiased view who watched the fight couldn’t give Haney a 116-112 victory.

Lomachenko was on a three-fight winning streak and won in 16 of his previous 17 matches before falling to Haney2.

Lomachenko’s Last Five Fights:

  • LOSS vs. Devin Haney via unanimous decision (May 20, 2023)
  • WIN vs. Jamaine Ortiz via unanimous decision (Oct. 29, 2022)
  • WIN vs. Richard Commey via unanimous decision (Dec. 11, 2021)
  • WIN vs. Masayoshi Nakatani via TKO – RD5 (June 26, 2021)
  • LOSS vs. Teofimo Lopez via unanimous decision (Oct. 17, 2020)

Lomachenko vs. Kambosos Jr. Prediction and Betting Pick

Kambosos Jr. struggled to put away an inferior southpaw in Hughes. Again, it was a fight that easily could have been awarded to his opponent.

Now, a hungry and determined Lomachenko enters the ring to face Kambosos Jr. in Australia. He’s a far stronger southpaw than the Aussie saw against Hughes last year.

Expressed differently, if Kambosos Jr. has the same strategy, this fight won’t last 12 rounds. He’ll take too much damage from Lomachenko by the time Round 8 or Round 9 rolls around.

If Lomachenko simply goes through the motions, he’ll win this fight from the judge’s scorecards. However, a motivated version of the Ukrainian will have an opportunity to end this fight with a TKO.

After what happened to him versus Haney, I do not foresee him being interested in this fight going to the judges. The Ukrainian veteran will attack early and often. This appears like a mismatch from the opening round.

The outright win wager has little betting value at -850, but backing a Lomachenko KO/TKO win in Australia is another story.

You can get +240 for the favorite, making this option the best bet for the upcoming fight.
