Our NRFI Picks for August 21 (With Reasoning)

After going through the latest no runs first inning odds, we believe these are the best NRFI bets today, August 21.

Atlanta Braves vs. Milwaukee Brewers

The Braves and Brewers set up as one of the strongest NRFI plays on today’s slate, with Chris Sale and Jacob Misiorowski bringing elite numbers into their matchup at American Family Field.

Sale has been outstanding this season, carrying a 2.16 ERA and 1.02 WHIP while pitching at a Cy Young-caliber level. He’s allowed one or no runs in four of his last six starts and continues to overpower opposing hitters. He’s also held Milwaukee in check throughout his career, allowing no home runs and just five RBIs across 86 at-bats.

Misiorowski has been just as dominant, entering with a remarkable 1.75 ERA and 0.75 WHIP. Those numbers have him firmly in the Cy Young conversation and give Milwaukee a formidable answer against Atlanta’s lineup.

With two elite pitchers taking the mound and both showing exceptional run prevention, this matchup has all the ingredients for a scoreless opening frame. The Braves and Brewers rank among our NRFI best bets today.

San Francisco Giants vs. Boston Red Sox

The Giants and Red Sox are set up for a strong NRFI opportunity at Fenway Park, with Logan Webb and Sonny Gray both entering in excellent form.

Webb owns a 3.50 ERA and 1.06 WHIP through 22 starts, and he has allowed just two earned runs over his last three outings spanning 20 innings. That recent stretch makes him a difficult pitcher to attack early.

Gray has been just as impressive, carrying a 2.65 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across 23 appearances. He has surrendered two or fewer runs in eight of his last 10 outings and has posted two scoreless performances in his last three starts. His numbers at Fenway are particularly encouraging, with a 2.45 ERA and .213 opponent batting average across 62.1 innings.

With both starters in strong form and Gray historically comfortable at Fenway, Giants vs. Red Sox NRFI at -150 is a strong play for a scoreless opening inning.

Detroit Tigers vs. Kansas City Royals

The Tigers and Royals stand out as one of the best NRFI bets today, with Troy Melton and Noah Cameron set to battle at Kauffman Stadium. Melton has emerged as Detroit’s ace following Tarik Skubal’s departure, posting an outstanding 1.71 ERA and 0.97 WHIP across 14 starts.

The right-hander has been nearly untouchable recently, allowing just one earned run over his last four outings. He has also been dominant on the road, carrying a 0.99 ERA while holding opposing hitters to a .160 batting average.

Kansas City counters with Cameron, who has shown significant improvement in recent starts. Although his season ERA sits at 4.16, the left-hander has allowed one earned run or fewer in four of his last five outings.

Melton’s road dominance and Cameron’s recent turnaround make both pitchers strong candidates to navigate the opening frame without allowing a run.

Our Daily No Runs First Inning Bets Strategy

We provide our reasoning for all daily NRFI picks, but we also want to share our general strategy for these bets. Learning how to approach the market can help you conduct your own predictions!

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to uncover good NRFI bets every day! We repeat the process for all games on the selected day and share the picks that come out on top on this page, using odds from the top MLB betting sites.

1. Check The Starting Lineups, Especially The Pitchers

You should always begin with the lineups. Check who the starting pitchers are and then go through the latest injuries and suspensions to see whether any of the teams will be missing key pieces.

We usually go to the CBS’ MLB injury report to see who’s out and who’s doubtful. They pull the data directly from league reports, so it’s trustworthy information.

2. Analyzing NRFI Stats

Once we know the most likely lineups, it’s time for a key step of our NRFI betting strategy: analyzing numbers. You need to go through various data points to determine how likely is for the opening inning of a game to end without any runs.

We explore the individual stats of the starting pitchers, we analyze the offensive numbers of both sides, and we also take a look at the total team stats for first inning runs.

Once we have a complete overview of what’s going on, we create our own estimates (in percentages) of how likely it is to see no runs in the first inning.

After that, it’s time to check the odds!

3. Line Shopping

It’s time to check some betting odds! We use two bookmakers that offer daily NRFI betting odds for the MLB: Bovada and Lucky Rebel. We check their prices for all games and turn them into probabilities.

We compare them to our own estimates and when we see good betting value, we place our NRFI wagers!

We strongly recommend using multiple top betting sites yourself for the best results. The two we highlighted above are all excellent for no runs first inning bets.

We might add more options in the future, but we want to keep it manageable for readers who follow us for now. If you join any of them, you should know the market is called “Will there be a run in the first inning?” at both bookies.
