This bout will be for Barrios’ WBC welterweight belt, which he won in September 2023 against Yordenis Ugas.
Pacquiao received this shot as a former champion, and it would be another checkmark for his legacy. “Pac-Man” had the WBO and WBA belts at 147 pounds, but lost his chance for the WBO title in his match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2015. At his peak, Pacquiao had extremely fast hands, but he never shied away from standing in the pocket and trading punches, for better or worse on some occasions. He had one of the most powerful left hands in the history of the smaller weight classes.
Barrios will have the height and reach advantage, and his jab is an excellent weapon. He has knockout power with 18 KOs, but “El Azteca” will likely stay on the outside and keep Pacquiao from unleashing his flurries.

Prime Pacquiao was a sight to behold. He was extremely quick, and to date, he is the only fighter to win championships in eight divisions, from flyweight (112 pounds) to super welterweight (160 pounds).
Pacquaio lost his final professional fight against Ugas in August 2021, and while he held his own, the Filipino superstar lost by unanimous decision. He wasn’t as accurate as he usually was, and retired after the fight to run for president in the Philippines, which he lost.
It remains to be seen what version of Pacquiao we’ll see on Saturday night. The Pacquiao vs. Barrios odds are actually not as far apart as I expected, and I’m not giving the legend much of a chance. As boxers get older, they lose hand speed, which was Pacquiao’s biggest weapon. He might still pack a punch, but Pacquiao won’t be as accurate, and he could get into danger trying to get inside of Barrios’ reach.

Barrios did struggle in his two biggest fights, losing to Gervonta “Tank” Davis by TKO in October 2020, and to Keith Thurman by unanimous decision in February 2022. But the 30-year-old fought to a draw on the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson undercard against Abel Ramos in the best fight of the night. That allowed Barrios to retain his WBC belt.
The Ramos fight showed that Barrios could take a punch and come back, but he lost control of the fight when he went away from his jab, which will be his best weapon on Saturday night. Barrios needs to stay calm and weather the early storm from Pacquiao. At 30 years old, he should have a much better gas tank than a man 16 years his senior.

Pacquiao – Another Notch for his Legacy
Pacquiao would become the oldest welterweight champion in boxing champion with a victory, and would be another positive for his already-outstanding resume. The Pacquiao vs. Barrios odds are being very respectful of Pacquaio’s legacy, because I think he should be north of +300, and could be by fight night.
Make no mistake, and with all due respect to Pacquiao, this would be a massive upset in boxing. It would also give Pacquiao a shot at a fight for even more money.

Barrios announced himself to the casual boxing fan at the Paul-Tyson card, but this is automatically the biggest fight of his career. If Barrios takes care of business, he’ll be in line for more money in his next fight, and perhaps a bigger name.
People will still tune in because it’s Pacquiao, but Barrios has a chance to throw his name into the mix for a major fight at 147 pounds. Boxing has become more about your name value than skill, and Barrios can boost his brand on Saturday night.
