Sturla Holm Laegreid won the bronze medal for Norway yesterday in the 20-kilometer biathlon individual event. In what was supposed to be a joyous occasion, Laegreid then told the world that he was sorry for cheating on his girlfriend three months ago.
The now ex-girlfriend in question has responded, and she is less than pleased about being in the media spotlight.
Key Points
- Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid won a bronze medal yesterday at the Winter Olympics.
- He then used his post-event interview to apologize for cheating on his then-girlfriend.
- The anonymous woman has responded today, and she isn’t happy about the media attention on her after the statement.
Laegreid Picks Wrong Time to Air Dirty Laundry
The incredible story started on February 10 in Milan, after Laegreid, a decorated biathlete, won bronze in the 20-kilometer event. He decided this was a good time to let the world in on his transgressions.
Lagreid tearfully stated:
"Six months ago, I met the love of my life. The world's most beautiful, sweetest person. And three months ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life and cheated on her."
On February 11, the woman in question, who chose to be anonymous, responded through a Norwegian tabloid:
"It's hard to forgive. Even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world.
I did not choose to be put in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it. We have had contact, and he is aware of my opinions on this."
It was a strange and inappropriate time to discuss personal matters by Laegreid, and the response on social media was a mixture of condemnation for what he did, and humor, because of the timing.
How Did Lagreid Respond?
Laegreid responded through a statement from the Norwegian team:
"I deeply regret that I brought up this personal story on what was a joyous day for Norwegian biathlon," he said. "I am not quite myself today, and I am not thinking clearly.
My apologies go to Johan-Olav (Botn, a fellow Norwegian athlete), who deserved all the attention after winning gold. They also go to my ex-girlfriend, who unwillingly ended up in the media spotlight. I hope she is doing well. I cannot undo this, but I will now put it behind me and focus on the Olympics. I will not answer any further questions about this."
It may not be that simple for Laegreid, especially if he ends up on the podium. It isn’t official yet, but Laegreid will likely be on the relay team, which won gold at the 2022 Olympics. Norway will likely be near the top of the board at Olympic betting sites.
Would Norway leave him off the team to avoid any further distractions? Nothing is certain as of now. But one thing is for sure: Laegreid has given us the most cringe-inducing moment of the Winter Olympics so far, and he’ll probably keep his mouth shut the next time a microphone is in front of him.
