Montreal Alouettes – Can Davis Alexander Steal the Show?
-
- Head Coach: Jason Maas
- Regular Season Record: 12-6
- Key Players: QB Davis Alexander, WR Tyler Snead, WR Tyson Philpot, RB Stevie Scott III, LB Tyrice Beverette, DB Wesley Sutton
27-year-old Alouettes’ QB Davis Alexander is set to make his first appearance in the Grey Cup after winning 13 consecutive games. Working up the depth chart, Alexander went from the third-team offense to have the best start to a CFL career in the league’s more than century-old history.
With Montreal’s two wins in the postseason over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, 19-16, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 42-33, Alexander extended his winning streak to 13 after 11 straight regular season victories. Is his inexperience going to finally catch up to him, though?
Let’s jump into my Alouettes’ preview, highlighting both sides of the ball on offense and defense:
Offense
I’m willing to bet that not many CFL fans knew who Alexander was at the start of the season in June. They certainly do now.
Alexander has thrown for 2,024 yards, 10 touchdowns, and just three interceptions, averaging 9.3 yards per completion. He finished the last three regular-season games with 918 passing yards and four touchdowns.
The Gig Harbor, WA native stayed hot in the Eastern Semi Final against Winnipeg, passing for 384 yards and a touchdown. He outdueled proven veteran Zach Collaros in a shootout, further cementing his status as an emerging star.

Alexander has spread the ball around to multiple offensive weapons, frequently targeting former Steelers’ WR Tyler Snead and WR Tyson Philpot. Snead leads the Alouettes with 1,129 yards and four touchdowns on 84 receptions this season.
The running game has been taken over by Stevie Scott III, who is coming off a dominant performance. He tore up the Blue Bombers for 133 yards and two scores, averaging 7.4 yards per carry. Montreal can win through the air or on the ground. While Alexander commands the spotlight, the offense has collectively been impressive.
Overall, the Alouettes averaged 24.7 points and 330.7 yards per game in the regular season. With an unbeaten Alexander under center, I have full confidence in Montreal for the 112th Grey Cup.
Defense
The Alouettes’ defense led the CFL, allowing just 341.9 yards per game. They excelled against the pass, topping the league by a wide margin in secondary performance.
In 2025, Montreal surrendered only 238.8 passing yards per game, well ahead of the second-place BC Lions, who allowed 247.3 yards. LB Tyrice Beverette was a standout for the Alouettes, making significant contributions in both pass coverage and run defense.

Beverette totaled seven sacks and four interceptions. He also led Montreal’s defense with 82 tackles in the 18-game regular season. With defensive backs Kabion Ento and Wesley Sutton in the secondary, the Alouettes have coverage across the field.
They have proven their ability to win low-scoring, defensive battles. Should Alexander falter, the defense has what it takes to carry this team to the Grey Cup.
Saskatchewan Roughriders – Will Experience Make the Difference?
- Head Coach: Corey Mace
- Regular Season Record: 12-6
- Key Players: QB Trevor Harris, WR Joe Robustelli, WR Tommy Nield, RB A.J. Ouellette, DT Micah Johnson, LB Jameer Thurman
While Saskatchewan Roughriders’ QB Trevor Harris has two Grey Cup rings, he hasn’t captured a championship title as the starting quarterback. Harris won the Grey Cup in 2012 as a member of the Toronto Argonauts and in 2016 with the Ottawa Redblacks.
The 13-year veteran is by far the most experienced quarterback in this matchup. He led a Roughriders’ charge to the top of the West Division and best overall record in the CFL at 12-6. They are coming off a nail-biter, with a 24-21 win over the BC Lions to advance to the Grey Cup. Will it translate into a CFL championship? Let’s break down the ‘Riders below:
Offense
Harris threw 24 touchdowns for the first time since 2017. He had a solid campaign, finishing with 4,549 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. At 39 years old, Harris has dealt with multiple injuries in recent years, but managed to avoid any serious issues this season.
WR KeeSean Johnson narrowly edged out Snead for the fourth-most receiving yards in the league, catching 120 passes for 1,159 yards and four touchdowns. He was joined by WR Joe Robustelli and WR Tommy Nield, who contributed 546 and 544 receiving yards, respectively.

Veteran A.J. Ouellette anchored the running game in 2025, rushing for 1,222 yards and eight touchdowns. The Roughriders featured a well-balanced offense, with strong receiving options and Ouellette leading the ground attack.
Saskatchewan averaged 383.8 yards per game, ranking second in the CFL this season. They outpaced the Alouettes in yardage, though both teams scored nearly the same, averaging 26.2 points per game.
Defense
The Roughriders’ defensive production was elite in Saskatchewan this season. They trailed only the Alouettes, allowing 342 yards per game. Saskatchewan also ranked first in the regular season by conceding just 22.7 points per game overall.
It’s important to note, however, that they are not the most well-balanced defensive unit. Running against the Roughriders is a tough task: Corey Mace’s defense gave up just 76 rushing yards per game.
They were the only defense to allow 90 or fewer rushing yards per game this season. DT Micah Johnson and LB Jameer Thurman provide Saskatchewan with two major run-stoppers in the center of the line.

However, the team is vulnerable in the secondary and susceptible to big passing plays. The Roughriders rank seventh out of nine teams, surrendering 266 passing yards per game. That’s where Saskatchewan could falter against a red-hot Alexander.
2025 Grey Cup Predictions and Betting Pick
According to the Grey Cup betting odds, this matchup is expected to be tightly contested. The numbers support this as well, with little separating the Alouettes and Roughriders.
However, as mentioned earlier, the Roughriders’ secondary has struggled against opposing quarterbacks. No other quarterback in the CFL is playing with as much confidence as Alexander right now. While he may not have as much experience as Harris, I don’t expect Alexander to be overwhelmed by the occasion.
He has been playing loose and should be a dual threat, both passing and running. Although Alexander’s been dealing with a hamstring injury, it doesn’t appear serious and didn’t affect his performance in the win over the Tiger-Cats.
This should be a close contest that goes down to the wire, so any points you can get provide solid value. Ride Alexander’s hot hand for your 2025 Grey Cup betting picks!
