- Mbappé left PSG for Real Madrid in June 2024, as he left his PSG contract run down so he could leave on a free transfer.
- The 26-year-old is now suing PSG for “moral harassment”, amid allegations that the club still owes him $61 million in unpaid salary.
Kylian Mbappé went to Paris Saint-Germain from Monaco when he was 18 years old, and turned into one of the best players in the world. He spent seven years in Paris, before leaving for Real Madrid.
However, it was an acrimonious breakup that continues to get even worse. Mbappé is suing PSG for “moral harassment”, and claims the club owes him $61 million in wages.
Mbappé Files Suit in Paris, Claims Club Made Him Train Away from Team
A prosecutor’s office in Paris revealed the news on Thursday afternoon.
The forward has accused PSG of making him train away from the team in June 2023, and he didn’t travel with them on a preseason tour of South Korea and Japan. He turned down a contract extension for $681 million over three years in 2022, which is when things started going south between the two sides. Mbappé says that PSG didn’t sign players to join him, although they did have Neymar and signed Lionel Messi.
The French captain declined a player option for 2023-24, choosing to let his contract run down. PSG tried to sell him to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, but Mbappé turned down the offer. Instead, he left PSG for free and signed with Real Madrid in June 2024. He ended his final season in Paris with his best campaign yet, scoring 44 goals in 48 games. However, some fans booed Mbappé in his final home game in Paris.
Mbappé scored 43 goals in his first season in Madrid. However, he didn’t win a trophy, while PSG won the Champions League, which eluded Mbappé during his time in Paris. Mbappé was ill recently, but he is back with Real Madrid, one of the top teams in the Club World Cup odds.
Does Mbappé Have a Chance of Winning His Case?
It might be difficult for Mbappé to win the “moral harassment” case. He did train away from the club, but it’ll be up to a judge to decide whether PSG had the right to send him away. The more interesting part of the case is the money Mbappé claims PSG owes him.
In April, his legal team went after PSG, saying that they owe him $61 million. The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) ruled in favor of PSG, but the club disputed, and the saga is ongoing. PSG said the LFP offered to mediate the case, but Mbappé refused.
Neither side is budging here, but it seems like, if Mbappé is owed this money, the issue would be over if he had received. $61 million is a lot to walk away from, and it seems like Mbappé is digging in his heels. PSG, which is owned by Qatari Sports Investments, has the money to draw this out. We might get a ruling on this by the end of 2025, but this could go well into 2026!
