Bookies Suggest Giants Will Switch from Russell Wilson to Jaxson Dart

  • The New York Giants have Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback, but they also drafted Jaxson Dart out of Mississippi State.
  • Wilson will start Week 2 for the Giants, but he didn’t have a good debut in Week 1.
  • BetOnline thinks Wilson will be the first quarterback benched during the NFL season.

The New York Giants are starting Russell Wilson as their quarterback, but rookie Jaxson Dart is waiting in the wings and could start sooner than later.

Some online bookies, such as BetOnline, think that Wilson will be the first quarterback benched during this NFL season.

Wilson Is Resounding Favorite to Be First QB Benched

The Giants confirmed on Monday that Wilson would be the starting quarterback for their Week 2 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. This is a U-turn from immediately after the Giants’ Week 1 21-6 loss at Washington, when head coach Brian Daboll wouldn’t confirm if Wilson would start in Week 2.

Wilson was pretty bad in the loss, going 17-of-37 for 168 yards, although he ran eight times for 44 yards. The 36-year-old averaged just 4.5 yards per attempt, failing to get the ball downfield, and he was 2-of-12 for 26 yards while under pressure.

Daboll was quick to say that the loss wasn’t all on Wilson, as the Giants couldn’t run the ball, nor could they protect the quarterback. It should also be noted that left tackle Andrew Thomas didn’t play against the Commanders, as he isn’t ready to return from a foot injury.

But that hasn’t stopped NFL betting sites from making Wilson the considerable favorite to be the first quarterback benched this season. According to BetOnline, Wilson is priced at -200 to relinquish his starting spot. That would clear the way for Dart, who the Giants took with the 25th pick in the NFL Draft.

How Soon Could Dart Replace Wilson?

Dart had a strong preseason, going 12-of-19 for 154 yards and a touchdown, while also running three times for 24 yards in a 34-25 win over Buffalo. The former Mississippi State star then went 14-of-16 for 137 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for another score in a 31-12 win over the Jets. Of course, that was in the preseason and against backups, but Dart showed enough to be named, unequivocally, the backup to Wilson. There was even reports of a special package for Dart if he played against the Commanders in Week 1, but he didn’t enter the game.

But if Wilson continues to struggle getting the ball down the field, the Giants could make the switch sooner rather than later. As a veteran, Wilson doesn’t want to be embarrassed, and Daboll doesn’t want to do it. But at some point, you have to give your team the best chance to win, and that might be Dart. At Wilson’s age, he might just be done.

The Giants don’t have a bye until Week 14, and while teams usually make major moves during the bye week, they won’t wait that long. Heading into the season, the Giants had the toughest schedule in the NFL, so there might not be any good time to do it.

If the Giants are 0-4 after Week 4, a road game in New Orleans might be the best spot to make the change. But it appears as though Wilson is just keeping the spot warm for Dart to take over for the G-Men, according to the odds!
