Notable Speech (+250) is the leading favorite to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile at the best horse racing betting sites. With a +250 price in the futures markets, Notable Speech has a 28.6% implied probability to get the win on the turf.
Aside from Notable Speech, Sahlan (+550) has the second-best odds to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Another Irish-bred horse, The Lion In Winter (+650), remains in the hunt, with a 13.3% implied chance to cash for Aidan O’Brien.
The European horses dominate the field at the top of the board, with a British horse the favorite and two Irish runners behind in the Breeders’ Cup Mile winner odds. Is that how things will play out at Del Mar, though?

Breeders’ Cup Mile 2025 Favorites
Some of the best turf runners in the world will be at Del Mar for the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Before post positions are revealed, let’s analyze the leading contenders:
Notable Speech (+250)
Charles Appleby’s Notable Speech is highly regarded entering the Mile on the turf. The Godolphin-owned colt made his debut on North American soil last year in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Despite the loss, Notable Speech was fast with a speed figure of 122. He lost the race by ¾ lengths and a head in a close finish at the wire. Notable Speed closed as the favorite, but was just nipped in the stretch run More than looks and Johannes to finish third.
The British runner most recently found the winner’s circle for the sixth time in 13 career starts. On September 13, Notable Speech beat My Boy Prince by 1 ¾ lengths at Woodbine in the Woodbine Mile Stakes (Gr. 1) after rocketing to kick free in the stretch. It was a great tune-up for Notable Speech in his second appearance in North America.

Prior to that win, Notable Speech had a positive performance in The Aga Khan Studs Prix Jacques Le Marois (Gr. 1) to place second. Fresh off the win at Woodbine, everything is looking up for Notable Speech after failing to strike gold in his debut at Del Mar last year.
Sahlan (+550)
Al Shaqab Racing’s Sahlan can’t be underestimated in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. He enters on the heels of back-to-back wins in the Prix Daphnis Samuel Liberman (Gr. 3) and the Qatar Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Gr. 1).
Sahlan responded soundly after finishing ninth and sixth in two earlier races. Overall, the horse has won three out of six assignments in his career, which started on November 29, 2024. In his latest victory, Sahlan benefited from Sean Levey’s poor ride aboard Rosallion.

Rosallion had the lead entering the stretch and somehow allowed that one to get away from him. Nevertheless, Sahlan is in form and has plenty of momentum behind him heading into the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
This will be Sahlan’s first start overseas after all six of his previous events were in Europe. Notable Speech has already been here for over a month after winning outside of Toronto last month. We’ll see if that long trip across the pond impacts his form at all.
The Lion In Winter (+650)
O’Brien is back stateside, as the Hall of Fame Irish trainer looks to put The Lion In Winter in the winner’s circle. The Lion In Winter will make his first start in the US after failing to win his last six races.
He won back-to-back starts to open his career last July and August. However, The Lion In Winter has failed to strike since August 2024. I will disclose, though, The Lion In Winter is showing improved form as of late.

The colt, owned by Sunderland Holding, finished third in the Qatar Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Gr. 1). He put up a solid fight against Sahlan and Rosallion, but didn’t have the same kick down the stretch. The Lion In Winter got closer in his latest start for a second-place finish in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr. 1) at Ascot.
He’s a well-established and experienced horse in Grade 1 racing. The Lion In Winter has participated in five consecutive Grade 1 events. High profile competition isn’t anything new to him, and he’s getting into form at the right time. If everything goes according to plan, The Lion In Winter could be a frontrunner!
Top Sleepers for the Breeders’ Cup Mile 2025
We recommend locking in a couple of longshot bets for your 2025 Breeders’ Cup Mile best bets on Saturday! The Mile is a competitive field, so placing wagers on a couple of dark horses is highly advised.

Johannes (+1000)
Kentucky-bred Johannes returns to Del Mar after a bold bid last year in the Mile. Johannes finished second behind More Than Looks by ¾ lengths. It was a valiant effort from Johannes, who I wagered on at +1200 odds to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Johannes came up short, but has remained in strong form since then. He has two wins in three races, including in his last start in the City of Hope Mile Stakes (Gr. 2). Johannes defeated Cabo Spirit by 1 ¼ lengths at Santa Anita.

He’s either won or placed second in seven of his previous eight events. Additionally, Johannes has logged a speed rating of at least 100 in 10 straight races. Also, his most recent workouts check out right, with Johannes recording a time of 1:00.40 at five furlongs.
At +1000, this is one of the best Breeders’ Cup Mile picks on the board!
-
Program Trading (+1200)
Program Trading has solid claims to a win for Chad Brown at Del Mar this weekend. The $356,551 Program Trading has finished as the runner-up or a winner in eight of nine starts.
He has three Grade 1 wins on his resume and is competitive in the rest of his Grade 1 entries. Most recently, Program Trading placed second in the Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes (Gr. 2) at Keeneland. With a speed figure of 118, there isn’t much else Program Trading could have done.
It was the fastest recording of his career and second race with at least a 117 in three outings. Despite the impressive rally in the stretch, Program Trading came shy at the wire by just ¾ lengths.
At +1200 odds, Program Trading makes a lot of sense for your longshot Breeders’ Cup Mile 2025 bets.
Breeders’ Cup Mile 2025 Predictions and Betting Pick
The Breeders’ Cup Mile should offer an entertaining race between experienced runners. It is shaping up to be a tight finish at the wire, with Notable Speech and Sahlan the two rightful favorites.
If Notable Speech runs his race, there probably isn’t another foe who can get him at the wire. The contestant’s latest entry was particularly impressive, as he edged away in the stretch to win at Woodbine. While that wasn’t the toughest field, jockey William Buick held back and didn’t press matters.
There was a lot more in the tank for Notable Speech, who could have won by a larger margin. Look for Notable Speech to leave it all out there on the track to oust Sahlan. Expect Sahlan to have a strong showing, but Notable Speech should prevail.
The price at +250 makes Notable Speech an attractive wager to win, so I recommend a winner’s bet for your 2025 Breeders’ Cup Mile betting picks!
