Argentina – Does Messi Have More Magic in His Bag?
The defending World Cup champs breezed through Group J with three wins over Austria, Algeria, and Jordan. But it has gotten much tougher for Argentina in the knockout stage as they needed extra time to down Cape Verde 3-2 in the Round of 32. Then, they pulled off a furious rally from 2-0 down to beat Egypt 3-2 in the Round of 16.
Lionel Messi continues to impress as he leads the Golden Boot race with eight goals, and he had a goal and an assist against Egypt. He also had a penalty saved, which was Messi’s second missed penalty of the tournament. Argentina is very dependent on Messi, which is wild considering the amount of talent they have. Lautaro Martínez has a goal, while Julian Alvarez has none.

Defenders Lisandro Martínez and Cristian Romero have chipped in with goals for Argentina. Messi doesn’t need much space to create his magic, but it’s concerning that Argentina’s other forwards aren’t firing.
The defense has also looked creaky as Martinez and Romero can have concentration lapses. I’m not confident in goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, either.
But the Argentina vs. Switzerland odds favor the champs because of one man, and so far, Messi has come through for his country.
Switzerland – Can the Swiss Stop Argentina’s Run?
Switzerland topped Group B with wins over Bosnia and Herzegovina and Canada, while they were held to a 1-1 draw against Qatar. In the Round of 32, they beat Algeria 2-0, then Switzerland required penalties to eliminate Colombia in a hotly-contested game.
Five players have combined to score Switzerland’s nine goals, led by three for 20-year-old midfielder Johan Manzambi. Granit Xhaka continues to be a rock in midfield, and the defense has conceded just three goals in the World Cup. Switzerland aren’t a fancy team, but they do have quality, and they work extremely hard for each other.

They’re excellent at getting back on defense and not allowing quick transitions, and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel has been up to the task when he has been called upon, and made a huge stop in the penalty shootout against Colombia.
However, Messi is, by far, the best individual player Switzerland has faced so far. It’s going to be interesting to see what their gameplan is. Will they focus on Messi, potentially man-marking him? The midfield battle will be crucial as well as Xhaka is very familiar with Enzo Fernández and Alexis Mac Allister from their time in the Premier League.
Argentina vs. Switzerland Predictions and Best Bets
This should be a tight game as Switzerland will try to close the space against Messi and Argentina, who should have the edge in possession. Switzerland is a disciplined team and won’t let Argentina roll over them.
Yet, I just can’t bet against Messi. Argentina to advance doesn’t offer any value, Argentina to win at -139 is the best return you’ll find, and the wager I’m most confident in. I don’t think that there will be many goals in this game, so the Under 2.0 goals at +125 is also enticing.
As far as goalscorers, Messi at -117 is better than I expected. For the Swiss, Breel Embolo at +380 is solid.
Jack’s View
Here’s what our soccer podcaster Jack Gilbert had to say about this match.
Argentina 1-0 Switzerland
It’s tighter than people expect because this is a World Cup quarterfinal. But in the end, Argentina’s quality should convincingly control the game. They probably won’t even have to come out of 1st gear as they did in the final 15 minutes against Egypt.
