Does Card Counting Work in Online Blackjack?

You can’t count cards in virtual online blackjack games. Most online blackjack is powered by Random Number Generators (RNGs), which shuffle the deck after every hand. This makes card counting impossible because there’s no consistent deck composition to track.

However, live dealer blackjack is a different story, to an extent. In live games, real cards are used, and they are dealt from a physical shoe. In theory, this means card counting could be possible. However, in practice, execution is very hard for reasons I cover below. Before we get there, let’s talk about the legal aspect of online card counting.

Is Card Counting Illegal at Online Casinos?

Card counting itself is not illegal since it’s a technique that doesn’t include any unfair usage of tools, just your brain. Still, many brick-and-mortar casinos will ask you to leave if they catch you doing it.

In contrast, online casinos don’t need to ban it outright because their systems already prevent it. In live dealer games, where counting might technically be attempted, casinos still have safeguards in place. If a player is suspected of using advantage play strategies, the casino can limit bets, reshuffle more frequently, or even restrict access to certain tables.

Online blackjack casinos are specifically designed to eliminate any advantage players might gain from tracking cards. Here’s how they do it:

Continuous Shuffling (RNG Systems)

In standard online blackjack, the deck is reshuffled after every hand using RNG software. In fact, you can say there is no deck, it’s like using a brand new one for every hand in live games. This ensures:

• No memory of previous cards
• No predictable patterns
• No opportunity to build a count

Every hand is completely independent, which removes the foundation that card counting relies on.

Multiple Decks in Live Games

Live dealer blackjack typically uses six to eight decks in a shoe. This makes counting significantly harder, even before other countermeasures are applied.

Frequent Shuffling

Casinos don’t wait until the shoe is nearly empty. Instead, they:

• Shuffle early using a cut card
• Rotate decks frequently
• Reset the count before it becomes meaningful

This prevents players from reaching a point where counting becomes effective. The pace at which the game moves doesn’t give players much time to properly count cards. You also don’t get deep enough into the deck to get any major advantage.

Table Limits and Monitoring

Even in live environments, casinos monitor gameplay patterns. If someone appears to be betting in a way consistent with card counting (for example, increasing bets when the count is favorable), they may:

• Adjust table conditions
• Limit bet sizes
• Intervene directly if needed

Similarly to real-world casinos, online gambling sites come with terms and conditions that allow them to limit players in different ways or even close their accounts.

Still, there are ways to improve your odds when playing online blackjack, so let’s talk about them.

Instead of trying to beat online blackjack with card counting that’s impossible in virtual games and very inefficient in live dealer games, focus on:

While you can’t realistically count cards in online blackjack, that doesn’t mean you’re out of options for improving your edge.
