2023 British Open Odds and Predictions

2023 British Open

The fourth and final major championship will be on the hallowed grounds of the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England, from July 20 to July 23. The Open Championship will feature the best in golf, as Cameron Smith aims to defend his 2022 Open Championship title.

As is customary for The Open Championship, also known as the British Open, the tournament will take place on a links course in the UK. The Royal Liverpool Golf Club doesn’t have the same prestige as St. Andrews, but it is a highly regarded golf course with Royal family connections from the 1800s.

The 151st Open Championship is the first British Open at Royal Liverpool since Rory McIlroy’s memorable win in 2014. It was 17 years ago when Tiger Woods captured his third British Open title at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

The Royal Liverpool Golf Club will have a slightly different look from the last time the British Open was held. With more bunkers, tougher run-off areas, and a new par 3, golfers that played here nine years ago will have more to think about at the 151st Open1.

Let’s take a look at the latest British Open odds from golf betting sites and make our predictions as to who will win this prestigious PGA event.

How To Watch The 151st Open Championship

The time zone will present some challenges for some viewers in North America. The typical morning-to-afternoon window commonly seen in PGA Tour events isn’t possible as The Open is in the UK.

Nevertheless, the third and final round should be convenient for Eastern Standard Time viewers on the weekend. It is important to verify tee times before making your bets at online sportsbooks. You do not want to be too late.

NBC owns the rights to the 151st Open Championship. Note that these broadcast times are subject to change and are based on NBC’s British Open TV schedule in the US. All times are in Eastern Standard Time:

The 2014 Open Championship winner is the betting favorite to win the 2023 Open Championship. Despite not winning a major championship since 2014, McIlroy is favored to win at Bovada.

It was a memorable year for McIlroy. Along with The Open, McIlroy won the PGA Championship title in 2014. No one, including McIlroy, expected him to go this long without another major championship.

The second and third favorites are not surprising, as Scottie Scheffler has the second-best 2023 Open Championship odds at +800. Jon Rahm rounds out the Top 3 at Bovada with +1100 odds to win the 2023 British Open.

The British Open odds will shift as the tournament progresses. Ensure that you are monitoring the latest odds at the best live betting sites.

British Open Betting Favorites

Two golfers have separated themselves in the odds to win the 151st Open Championship. With their odds so close together, McIlroy and Scheffler can almost be considered co-favorites.

Rory McIlroy (+750)

It has been an incredibly frustrating seven years for McIlroy at major championships. However, his failures in majors haven’t prevented him from having success overall.

McIlroy won the FedExCup Championship in 2016, 2019, and 2022. He staged an incredible comeback to edge out Scheffler at the TOUR Championship for his third PGA season title2.

In his 16-year career, McIlroy has 23 career wins. Most recently, he won the CJ Cup in South Carolina this past October3. McIlroy has gone without a win longer than he’d like, but has been in top form as of late.

He’s scored Top 10 finishes in five straight events, with the Scottish Open currently pending. This includes T7 at the PGA Championship and second at the US Open last month4. McIlroy keeps getting closer to winning and comes into this event in his best form of the season.

Earlier in 2023, there wasn’t much consistency to McIlroy’s game, but the native of Northern Ireland is trending up. Heading into the British Open, McIlroy is first in driving distance and second in SG: Off The Tee on the PGA Tour5.

The wide-open links course at Royal Liverpool should play to his advantage off the tee. McIlroy, who hails from Northern Ireland, is obviously no stranger to playing in the UK and has won here before.

Bovada got it correct by installing McIlroy as the favorite to win the 2023 British Open.

Scottie Scheffler (+800)

Everything pointed to Scheffler winning the FedExCup last year. He had the lead going into the final tournament and just had to stay the course. Although, that didn’t happen, as Scheffler fell back and McIlroy seized the moment.

Nevertheless, Scheffler won the 2022 Masters and had a successful campaign in 2021-22. Currently, the 27-year-old native of Ridgewood, New Jersey, is ranked No. 1 in the world, according to the Official World Golf Ranking6.

Scheffler has won two tournaments this year. He doesn’t have a major championship, but captured the “fifth” major of the year at The Players Championship. Additionally, Scheffler won the WM Phoenix Open in Arizona on Super Bowl Weekend7.

Since winning The Players in March, Scheffler has remained in good form. He has finished in the Top 10 in 10 of his previous 11 events going into the Scottish Open. After finishing third in the U.S. Open, Scheffler was T4 at the Travelers Championship on June 258.

Scheffler is first in SG: Off The Tee, as well as SG: Approach to Green and SG: Total. Where Scheffler has lacked this season has been his putting game. He is 131st and below the Tour average in SG: Putting9.

If Scheffler can get his stroke working on the greens at Hoylake, he will be tough to beat at The Open.

British Open Best Value Bet: Patrick Cantlay (+2500)

There are lots of golfers to bet on to win the British Open at Bovada. Finding the best value in the field is important for your British Open betting strategy.

We have circled Patrick Cantlay from the British Open odds as our top-value bet at +2500. Cantlay is in search of his first win of the 2022-23 season at Royal Liverpool.

The 31-year-old native of Long Beach, California, notched two wins last season. He won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the BMW Championship last August. His best season was in 2020-21 when Cantlay added four PGA Tour titles to his mantle10.

Cantlay is one of the best players on the PGA Tour without a major championship win. He is typically involved in the final round of big events, but needs to learn how to get off to a hot start in majors in the first round.

Since February 19, Cantlay has finished in the Top 10 in seven of 12 tournaments. In the three 2023 PGA majors to date, he finished T14 at the Masters and U.S. Open, while a T9 effort at the PGA Championship in May was encouraging11.

Cantlay is heading to the UK first in total driving, birdie average per round, and going for the green. Additionally, he ranks fifth in SG: Total and SG: Off The Tee in the 2022-23 season. His putting has been much better than McIlroy and Scheffler, which is above the PGA average in 21st12.

This looks like our first bet of the 151st Open Championship at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

British Open Best Longshot Bet: Denny McCarthy (+10000)

Denny McCarthy isn’t a household name. You won’t hear his name discussed much in the lead-up to the British Open. However, McCarthy has been a consistent operator recently.

With his Open Championship odds at +10000, this isn’t a bad option for a longshot bet. The 30-year-old from Rockville, Maryland, has been putting together some solid results over the last month.

McCarthy has quietly been one of the better performers on the PGA Tour. It might sound crazy. However, McCarthy has been playing confident golf since finishing P2 at the Memorial Tournament on June 4.

After a P2 finish at Muirfield Village Golf Club, McCarthy had a respectable showing at the U.S. Open. He left Los Angeles with a T20 finish and headed to the Travelers Championship feeling good.

McCarthy finished T7 against a talented field, and then a T6 finish this past Sunday at the John Deere Classic. Since May 7, McCarthy has finished in the Top 10 in four of seven tournaments. He’s missed just one cut this season13.

As one of the best putters on the PGA Tour, McCarthy should have success on the greens at Royal Liverpool. In fact, McCarthy ranks third in SG: Putting and first in putts sank within 10 feet. Further, his SG: Total is in good order, with a 1.198 for 16th on the PGA Tour14.

At the very least, you should consider betting on McCarthy to make the cut. For a longshot bet, he’s worth considering at +10000 odds, too.

2023 British Open Prediction: Rory McIlroy (+750)

It has been a long time since McIlroy won a major championship. One of the best memories of McIlroy’s career was winning at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in 2014.

Wouldn’t it be the perfect scenario for McIlroy to return to Royal Liverpool and win the Claret Jug nine years later? That would be a special way for McIlroy to end the long major drought that he has experienced.

In his current form heading to Europe, you have to look at McIlroy and believe that he has a legitimate chance of winning. Currently, McIlroy is playing his best golf of the season.

McIlroy is locked in and going to a golf course where he should have plenty of confidence. There is a strong chance that the unexplainable losing skid ends for McIlroy at Hoylake.

Consider including McIlroy on your British Open betting card in the final major championship of 2023.
