Will PGA Let Bryson DeChambeau Play Tune-Up Tournament; Will That Affect Ryder Cup Odds?

  • Bryson DeChambeau says the PGA Tour won’t let him play in a tune-up tournament before the Ryder Cup due to his status as a LIV player.
  • Most of the Americans didn’t play for four weeks ahead of the last Ryder Cup, in which they were routed by Team Europe.
  • The Ryder Cup odds are moving more towards the Europeans.

Bryson DeChambeau revealed that he likely won’t play a tune-up tournament with his Ryder Cup teammates ahead of the event because he is a LIV member.

The Americans didn’t play much ahead of the last Ryder Cup, and were routed by Team Europe, who is closing the gap in the Ryder Cup odds.

DeChambeau Holding Out Hope That He Can Play Napa Valley Tournament

DeChambeau said in an interview at the LIV event in Indianapolis that “it’s on them” if DeChambeau plays at the Procure Championship two weeks ahead of the Ryder Cup.

The PGA Tour has suspended all LIV players from playing in PGA events, which makes it more impressive that DeChambeau is even on the team. The 31-year-old won once on the LIV Tour in South Korea in May, and finished third in the final individual standings. But DeChambeau has six top-10s in the last eight majors since the 2023 Ryder Cup, including a win at the 2024 U.S. Open. It should be noted that the win came in a showdown against Team Europe leader Rory McIlroy.

American captain Keegan Bradley has already confirmed that DeChambeau will be on the team at Bethpage Black, but he would like the players to stay competitive. Ahead of the 2023 Ryder Cup, most of the team hadn’t played in a month or more before heading to Rome, Italy. Team USA was routed 16.5-11.5. DeChambeau was left off the team by captain Zach Johnson.

Is This Affecting the Ryder Cup Odds?

The Ryder Cup odds are moving more towards Team Europe with just over a month to go. Two weeks ago, the Americans were favored at -150, but you can find them at -135 at many golf betting sites now. It’s difficult to say whether the DeChambeau drama is affecting the Ryder Cup odds. But if you’re a Team USA fan, they probably aren’t helping.

This will be DeChambeau’s third Ryder Cup appearance, and he has a career record of two wins, three losses, and one tie so far. He lost all three of his matches in 2018 in France, but DeChambeau was much better in Wisconsin in 2021, winning two of his three matches and tying the other. He also drove the green at Whistling Straits in his singles match with Sergio Garcia (who is also a LIV player now). The eagle putt spurred DeChambeau to a 3&2 victory. The Americans won that event 19-9.

It would be smart of the PGA Tour to let DeChambeau play in the Napa Valley tournament. However, they’ve dug their heels in on the LIV issue and aren’t likely to back down now. There are several Team Europe players who will play in DP World Tour events to stay sharp leading up to the Ryder Cup. However, it doesn’t seem that the PGA Tour wants to do any business with the LIV players.

It wouldn’t be a shock at all if DeChambeau’s absence at the Procure Championship has an effect on the Ryder Cup odds, even if it’s a minor movement.
